Spurred on by the light buzz from beer we had chugged for charity, we pounced upon some unsuspecting flag-waving partygoers during the July 4 Shanghaiist + Boxing Cat Brewery Party last weekend.

The days are quickly counting down and we're super excited about our Independence Day Party at the Boxing Cat Brewery. First things first: Registration for Charity Drinking Teams ends tomorrow, JULY 1!!!. Go over to Boxing Cat's location at 82 Fuxingxi Lu to register or beg and plead your case for an extension with the Shanghaiist editors. The competition will kick off at 3pm.
As you may have read, Shanghaiist and the Boxing Cat Brewery are teaming up to throw one heckuva American Independence Day party! And as part of that, we're having a raffle and a drinking competition... for charity. A little confused about that last part? Here's our handy explanation on how you can get completely wasted for a good cause.
It's only two weeks before we light the candles, break out the red, white and blue and begin celebrating the birthday of the United States of America (be sure to slur “meri” to “murr” for added authenticity). Since we at Shanghaiist are never ones to let a good party opportunity go to waste, we’ve partnered up with The Boxing Cat Brewery to host a good ol’ Fourth of July bash.
Direct from SmartShanghai's newly spruced up website comes this piece of bar news: "The British Bulldog ... has completed their renovations and is (soft) open for your drinking needs. Apparently these renovations were quite intense with a new second floor terrace, a new DJ booth, and sports relegated to their third floor with a private viewing room for you and your 'mates.'" SmSh also reports (in The Wire, which you can't link to directly for some reason?) that a big U.S. Independence Day party is planned. (The Brits celebrate it too you know: good riddance!) Perhaps we'll reserve judgment on why our favourite sports bar is trying to banish the footy upstairs until then. No answer on their "Dog and Bone", so if you head down to the Bulldog before July 4th, you do so at your own risk.
The first sign of trouble came when it took half an hour to get a waiter to take drink orders. To leave a party of twenty-one hanging dry for half an hour is a restaurateuring felony on the order of cockroach croutons. In fact, the actual wait was longer for some people who had arrived considerably before Mrs. Imagethief and I did. If nothing else, get the beer flowing. After some badgering we managed to get the waiter round to take orders. Apparently intimidated by the idea of keeping twenty-one drink orders straight (an admittedly tall task, but one I've seen managed elsewhere), he worked hard to encourage us to stay away from individual orders and simply take pitchers of beer. Most of us were willing to be persuaded on this front, despite some early enthusiasm for the heavily promoted craft beers served at the restaurant.Continue reading "Imagethief vs Bubba's"
Now, that felt like a 4th of July party (and some Canadians in attendance said it wasn't a bad effort for Canada Day, either). Hot, sweaty weather. No rain! Hamburgers. Beer. Live music. Water balloons. Hamburgers. Beer. Drinking contests. Fireworks (albeit during daylight). Hamburgers. Beer. Ketchup battles. Some guy from Beijing getting pantsed. Hamburgers. Beer.
The first time Shanghaiist went to Absolute House, it was for Jennifer Gentle, and we weren't too impressed by the venue. Last night changed that, though, as Shanghaiist attended what they could easily say was one of the best concerts ever put on in the city. After a very mediocre afternoon at Dino Beach's Rock It! festival (would it have killed them to serve some beer there?), Shanghaiist headed to Absolute House for a show where everyone danced, jumped, and sang along with MC Ninja. In the meantime, Shanghaiist is going to try to delay their continuing weekend hangover by heading to the City Diner Independence Day Burger Grill-Off and downing a few. See you there! NOW!
As much as you want of the above for 150 kuai.
For those of you who aren't quite ready to prance around in a swimming suit showing off your pasty white, jell-o like spare tire, don't fret there are plenty of quality bands playing in the dimly lit bars where t-shirts are required. The Scoff an energetic (pogo friendly) garage band from Beijing will headline the 2nd installment of 4live's Young Beijing series. At Live bar, Boys Climbing Ropes celebrate the arrival of summer with a final show before 2 members head back to Canada for vacation. If that wasn't enough to keep you busy on a Friday night, Pirates Bar is throwing its hat in the ring with Electronicat and amazing, one man electro/noise pop band from Europe. Saturday the Go Team! will be strutting their stuff at Absolute house, Rock It will be in full swing and for those of you into something a little quieter, the Dream Factory is holding an acoustic guitar night. For those of you into hip-hop or Dj's with skill (not the laptop variety) then head to 4Live for the DMC championship.
Only five more days until the City Diner/Shanghaiist 4th of July party this Sunday — which, yes, we realize is the 1st of July and (thanks to a commenter) Canada Day. But we promise this party, like all Shanghaiist parties, is very Canadian friendly. In fact, this party is open to anyone of any nationality who enjoys food, drink, music and fun. Sound like you?

The Shanghai Cowboys have retooled and are ready to ride again. So says head cowboy Gary Flint, who Shanghaiist is ready to crown the best country and western singer in China, based mainly on the fact that this is China and, dadgumit, he's just damn good.
