We -ists are an eclectic bunch, but there's a couple of things we all love: famous people, social causes, and wacky local facts. Join us as we starf**k, get virtuous, and learn across the -ist network!

Torontoist immediately wins our heart by using the word "Jackass" in a headline. In fact, we love their use of it so much that we're going to use it as much as possible throughout this post. For example, it looks like there are Toronto-area jackasses besides those who misuse the sidewalk: look at the crap on sale on Toronto's craigslist. But it looks like Toronto doesn't contain the kind of jackasses who pee in public pools, as the issue never came up when they interviewed the creators of art installations in their public wading pools.

As if you needed us to tell you, it's Oscar night morning. We have one eye on the TV right now -- Dragon TV, and at least one other local network -- are showing a "live"[1] feed of the red carpet coverage from E! (with Chinese commentary). Why not watch on our satellite? Because it never freakin' works. CCTV usually replays the Oscars Monday evening, although we haven't found confirmation of that online yet (anyone out there got the details?). In past years CCTV's coverage has been in English with Chinese subtitles.

We have had some really long layovers at the Narita Airport. On our way to Hawaii a couple weeks ago, we were there for eight hours. And yesterday, on our way back, it was around five hours. Luckily, Narita isn't a bad place to hang out. If you have a computer with you, a day's worth of internet access, wireless or wired, costs you just US$5. And the wireless works most places in the airport (Terminal 1, at least ... we've never been to Terminal 2). We usually head down to the lounge beneath gates 25 and 26, where a lot of the Northwest Airlines flights leave from. It is often empty down there, for some reason, but there are plenty of desks with internet hookups, as well as rows and rows of reclining chairs aimed at flat screen TVs.

  • Good to see Chinese entrepreneurial spirit is still going strong -- this time in Hunan province. Thirty-five-year-old Pang Zeng Sheng has seen a gap in the panda diplomacy market, and has bought 16 website domain names that are related to the two pandas that China gave Taiwan -- Tuantuan and Yuanyuan (maybe Jen Chung would be interested?). He has set his sights on 500,000 yuan bounties for sites featuring both names, and 100,000 yuan for a single name. He opined, "I am confident about these websites, which should be valuable. They are legal, because they don't violate anyone's rights", however some are saying that the government may snatch them from his hands as they are of public interest.
  • More and more Chinese people are travelling abroad ...
  • ... although finding a seat on a train inside the country, after the Spring Festival, is still mission impossible.
