Bomb explodes in Jiading supermarket, no injuries reported
Authorities have arrested a man for setting off a remotely-controlled bomb in a supermarket in the Shanghai suburb of Jiading at about 2pm yesterday. The man, who has now confessed, supposedly planted the bomb in a locker of an RT-Mart on Xinyu Rd (near Cao'an Road) and then called the supermarket around 1:10pm threatening to set it off.
Shanghai to "encourage" 4.4 million people to move from downtown to suburbs
We hope this will ease the squeeze in downtown Shanghai: "More than 4.4 million residents will be encouraged to move to the suburbs in 2020 after the city government pledged to build seven new towns with full public service facilities and more job opportunities, the city's urban planner revealed yesterday." The seven towns planned are Jiading, Songjiang, Lingang (in Pudong), Qingpu, Nanqiao (in Fengxian), Jinshan and Chongming.
Creepy! Mysterious body parts found in Putuo, Jiading creeks
Sounds frighteningly mafia-ish, doesn't it? From Shanghai Daily: "Police from Putuo and Jiading districts said DNA tests will be carried out to see if the body parts belong to the same person. At this point, officers said they believe the parts belonged to the same woman. Part of a human torso was found in Xinchapu Creek in Jiading on Saturday and a left leg was found in the same creek in Putuo the next day. Police are searching for the other body parts. The cause of death was unclear. "We found cuts on the torso that look like they could be from a boat's propeller, but we still don't know whether it was a murder or an accident," said a Jiading officer surnamed Chen."

Pudong explosion leaves four with burns covering 98%-99% of body
Around 5:30pm on Thursday afternoon an explosion occurred at Shanghai Jie Pai Ke Engineering Company (上海捷派克工程公司) in Shanghai’s Pudong Distict, injury a group of workers who were in a nearby company vehicle. The blast resulted in seven workers seriously injured, with four of them receiving burns on over 95% of their bodies. The four workers are currently in intensive care at Changhai Hospital. The cause of the explosion is still being investigated.
Store robberies on the rise in Shanghai
Uh oh, it looks like us pedestrians aren't the only ones getting stolen from recently, thanks to the current dastardly economic situation. City police have now issued a warning reminding companies that keeping large amounts of cash on their premises may not be a good idea. Shanghai has seen a 35% rise in thefts of local areas since February, compared to the same period last year. The most robbed districts: Qingpu, Pudong, Fengxian, Songjiang and Jiading. Super fast internet coming to Shanghai this year
Avid Youtube watchers rejoice, the days you struggled against the slow crawl of the Chinese Internet may soon be a relic of the past! Shanghai's Science and Technology Commission announced that the city will be getting an Internet service 50 to 100 times faster than current speeds sometime this year.
Murders and student suicides in Shanghai
Shanghai Daily reports a man killed 3 members of his family in a grocery store on Tongzhan Road, in Jiading's Fengbang Town. It appears he killed his wife and in-laws as a result of a domestic dispute and has since turned himself in. Meanwhile, ChinaSmack informs us that within a few days of the start of the new semester, four middle school students in Shanghai have committed suicide.
Bomb hoax in Jiading District
On Wednesday the manager of a construction firm in Shanghai's Jiading District was held hostage by a man who claimed he had a bomb. The three-hour drama ended with the offender taken into custody. According to Shanghai Daily, this is the fourth bomb hoax that has been carried out in the city this summer. We kind of think that's enough for this year.
