Pudong parents viciously string up and beat 12-year-old son in public
Now, that'll learn the little larcenist. In Pudong around 11:30am on Sunday, a couple from Anhui province tied up their 12-year-old son from a metal frame used for hanging clothes and used a whip to demonstrate traditional child-rearing techniques. The boy was being punished for stealing 300RMB from his parents, who work as electronic waste recyclers, to play video games. Considering that some will sell their kids to get their gaming fix, a little pocketing of your parents' rent money seems harmless in comparison.

Sperm collecting machine: Chinese innovation at its best
We have no doubt that Chinese inventors will soon rule the world. Don't believe us? Well, just take a look at this video. Some wonderful company in Jiangsu has apparently invented a sperm collecting machine. Great! With this machine, now sperm banks around the world no longer need to get donors to "do it yourself". The machine boasts of a cylinder pump which they say feels like a vajayjay inside. Like it tighter? Looser? Faster? Slower? All of that, and the height of the pump itself is adjustable. There's also a screen that can play you your favourite porn in a wide variety of file formats while the machine pumps the baby batter out of you. This machine is supposedly great for sufferers of premature ejaculation because it helps to desensitise the penis. Any PE patients out there? Get one from their Alibaba store for the great price of US$2,800 and tell us if it works!

The daring, but ultimately futile, escape of 8 "internet addiction center" patients
Internet addiction centers suck - at best, they haven't proven to be effective and at worst... well, there's the whole torture, beatings and "accidental deaths" thing to contend with. So it's no wonder that eight teens sentenced to one of these "clinics" would try to escape. Unfortunately, their daring plan only worked until they were caught by the police and handed over to their parents, who promptly put them back in the centers. Alas.

This newly built structure found in Jiangsu Province's Funing County (阜宁县) , has recently come to be known on the Chinese interwebs as the "Shanzhai China pavilion". Residents of the impoverished county interviewed by Xinhua have criticised the government for spending RMB3.5 million on what they saw as a "face project" and for allocating a whopping 8,000 square metres to the square on which the 'pavilion' was erected. Unlike the China pavilion though, the structure measures only 49m by 49m -- too small for exhibitions for any sort, and good only as a "vase", as one local villager puts it.

Now illegal: Blogging about the private lives of government officials
The local government in Xuzhou, Jiangsu province has just passed what looks like a wide-reaching law making it illegal for people to publish someone else's 'private information' on the Internet. Offenders can be fined up to 5,000 yuan and could be barred from using the Internet for half a year! The news comes one month after a district housing bureau chief in Nanjing was dismissed after netizens posted photos of him wearing a RMB100,000 watch and smoking a RMB150 a pack cigarettes. The pictures spread like wildfire on the web because those items were seen to be beyond the means of someone living on a civil servant's modest wages.

When Deng Xiaoping launched his open door policy, he undoubted had this village in mind, Huaxi, 100 miles north of Shanghai in Jiangsu Province, which is commonly known today as China's richest village. Melissa Chan of Al Jazeera visited the village, and found people there living in huge houses complete with all the latest home appliances and cars and what have you. Life appears to be so good there we ourselves were momentarily tempted to move there.
