We're hearing rumors that Shanghai's premier street of sleaze may have finally gotten the red stamp. A tipster rode by Tongren Lu earlier today and found that a big Expo wall had been put up in front of it. Simple renovations or did the Jing'an authorities decide that ladies of the night weren't what they wanted the city to sling - even if it's always been a big hit with the foreigners? UPDATE: We went to check it out ourselves last night. It seems that the strip is still alive and well - the Expo work is happening to the building next to it.

Will we soon be hearing a "Broadway melody" on Nanjing Xi Lu? According to Shanghai Daily, Jing'an District authorities are totally hoping to turn that strip of road into something like the Manhattan theater district. We can't seem to find any other info on it, but we're always up for a couple more musical distractions... and people line kicking their way down "ol' Nanjing Xi" has a hilarious ring to it.
Back in the day, before Tong Ren Lu became the predominant strip of seediness for Shanghai, we would cruise down Julu Lu and Maoming Lu for our dose of pointing at old expats trying to get laid (as well as some drinks and partying, of course). We went into a fit of depression when Maoming Lu lost its luster five or six years ago. And now we must bid goodbye to Julu Lu as well. Urbanatomy reports that the street is nothing but "hollow shells wallowing in clouds of asbestos dust" now, probably thanks to one of the city's many initiatives to clean itself up. New York lost part of its charm when those XXX theaters on Times Square closed. Is Shanghai going to be more boring from now on too?
Alas, it seems like Huai Hai Lu stalwart Bon Bon may have closed up shop over the weekend, and the only guys who noticed were SmartShanghai. It's Thursday and the club still has to issue official notice of the closure, but according to the nightlife website, they're planning on moving locations. But where will Shanghai's trance-loving expat high school crowd go until then?! WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN?

A woman was killed and two men were injured yesterday during a robbery at an apartment near the crossing of Changde Lu and Yuyuan Lu in Jing'an district. According to the China News Agency's Shanghai bureau the murderer tried to break in to the apartment but met with resistance from the residents. Photos and report (in Chinese), report in English.
In fact TTing has already been open for nearly four months, but has yet to do a formal grand opening. Like any fledgling business in Shanghai, it's their first year so they're still struggling, but slowly the place is building a following — not just for the jazz-pop band performing in the main room but also for the pool tables and VIP nightclub vibe happening downstairs.
