Tis the weekend for some sweaty contact sport action with the Shanghai Sevens and finally a proper mixed martial arts fight in the form of RUFF! Also, check out one of the world's best beatboxers at Zeal, a Creative Party at Kin, or improv comedy at AT Bar. And if that's still not enough, head over to our calendar for much, much more.
Weekendist: Killa Kela, a creative party, and plenty of contact sports!!
Live Music: Pixel Toy, Killa Kella, Linkin Park, Snapline and the Creative Bazaar
The weekend is finally here, and despite the buzz surrounding Linkin Park on Sunday, there are plenty of other shows that are also worth checking out. Friday, Yuyintang warms things up for Linkin Park fans with four local nu-metal bands strutting their stuff and letting out their best screams. While over at 4Live, Pixel Toy, from Hong Kong, provide an eccentric mix of Cantonese pop electronica. Opening for them is Banana Monkey. Phreaktion in celebration...
Killa Kela @ Volar on Friday
Killa Kela hasn't been in town that long but, already, he's been getting around. And by 'around', we mean in the doing-lots-of-things sense, not in the slutty sense (unless any readers want to come forward and tell us otherwise...)
Last week in live music
The Honeys and Yuguo, kicked things off at The Dream Factory (new Yuyintang) last Friday night. This was our first time to the venue and it was impressive — bigger, louder and much closer to downtown than the old Yuyintang. Underlounge was also packed Friday with people ready for good old skanking to the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, only one problem: The band never made it from Tokyo. Luckily most people were too drunk to realize the band never showed and the DJs kept the crowd going with plenty of ska tunes. On Saturday, people turned out en masse for the Infadels and Killa Kela show at Absolute House. Killa and the teenage beat boxers from Yanji were impressive, less so was the sound system which could never seem to balance out instruments and vocals. Lucky for us, we were invited to the Lab on Sunday where Killa Kela and crew made a special visit. Being such a small space, and with killer (killa?) equipment, the crowd was treated to a mind blowing performance by local beatboxers and Killa Kela himself.
Pencil This In: What's coming up this weekend in Shanghai
Shanghai. It is all happening. Here's the proof:
Japanese Ska, Tookoo and Return of the Honeys
When it comes to live music, Shanghai's long had an inferiority complex when comparing ourselves to Beijing, and often drowned out that lack of music with plenty of beer. But after taking a glimpse of what is happening in June, we're starting to feel a real glimmer of hope. This week kicks it all off with a number of talented bands taking the stage.
The Infadels (and Killa Kela) are coming!
For fans of electronic rock, the Infadels are bliss. Marching disco-punk meet rave riffs and pop licks to make freakishly catchy gems that beg to be played again, and again, and again. "Love Like Semtex" seems to be the it single — and rightly so, the lead off their studio debut is infectious, frenzied dance-rock at its finest — but it's "Jagger 67" (video attached) and "Topboy" that Shanghaiist can't ... stop ... listening ... to. (We're onto a 12-step program now — will let you know how that goes.)
