Well played, Jeffrey Katzenberg, well played. Like every other Hollywood player these days, DreamWorks Animation is trying to get its foot into the China market, and is currently in negotiations to establish a joint venture in Shanghai. They've already picked out Oriental DreamWorks as the name for their JV. Ooh, ahh, how cultural.
DreamWorks Animation is coming to Shanghai!
Watch: Kung Fu Panda proposes marriage on BJ-SH high-speed rail
Okay, it's not really Po the panda, but still: dressing up as Po to propose marriage on the Beijing-Shanghai high speed rail is awesome any way you slice it. On July 5th, a cosplay enthusiast proposed to his girlfriend of over three years, who he called 'the most important person in my life', freaking her out with his repeated pawings before going for the big reveal. Apparently it was all organized on Weibo!
Watch: 'Legend of a Rabbit' a shamelessly shanzhai Kung Fu Panda
Here's the pitch: An action-comedy CG animated children's film set in ancient China, where the hero is a likable and somewhat roly-poly talking animal who subverts the traditional notion of more rotund members of society being less coordinated. He's sort of bumbling, but ultimately has a good heart and succeeds in the end with whatever quest he's found himself saddled with. Oh, and he's a cook that works with flour starch products! Yeah, because overweight characters loooove their food to the extent that they're unsuitable for any other profession.
Tuesday Timewaster: Kung Foo Bear
You know how some internet videos have the potential to become internet memes, if only they didn't have so much extraneous stuff? Kung Foo Bear is one of them. The parts with the director looking for a Shanzhai Superstar are kind of tedious, but the man in the bear suit jumping around and screaming "打打打" (hit hit hit) before enacting famous Street Fighter II moves is golden. Somebody turn those parts into individual gifs NOW.
Revealed: Zhao Bandi, the man behind the Kung Fu Panda protest
EastSouthWestNorth has uncovered Zhao Bandi (赵半狄), the man behind the Kung Fu Panda protest, as an unabashed panda lover and a fashion designer who has a line inspired by the national treasure. Check out the images from Zhao's fashion show below. Apparently he got China's internet celeb numero uno Furong Jiejie (芙蓉姐姐) to model for him and that one picture of her is priceless:
