Quality and beauty are the two features Andrew James looks out for when he sources for contemporary art. This was what he liked about Dorothy M. Yoon's works when he first came upon them at a London art fair. We received the following tip in the form of an SMS from Dan who saw the following story on TV in Singapore while vacationing with his wife (Oh the wonders of modern technology!): Last Saturday morning, a fire broke out at a Tongchuan Lu apartment. Footage from CCTV4 showed the man perched on top of a ledge on the fourth floor as firefighters attached a safety harness to his waist. Shortly afterwards he slipped and plunged downwards, hitting a metal pole before he was stopped by the safety harness somewhere around the second floor. Close shave! To view the video, click here.

Killa Kela hasn't been in town that long but, already, he's been getting around. And by 'around', we mean in the doing-lots-of-things sense, not in the slutty sense (unless any readers want to come forward and tell us otherwise...)

Last Saturday, Shanghaiist was invited to attend the unveiling of Shanghai's newest gallery space, m97. Once we negotiated the tricky shared building entrance, we made our way to the second floor and was immediately impressed by the physical space and airy nature of the gallery. The grand opening featured an exhibition of by emerging Beijing photographer and artist Jiang Zhi titled "Things Would Turn Simpler Once They Happened". Immediately we had diametrically opposing thoughts. "How were these photos taken?", and "I don't quite get it...". We wished that our interpretation of the photographic exhibition was as simple as the exhibition's title, but we assume this is the art part of the exhibition. Last Saturday night, Shanghaiist fancied going to this new place we heard of — the bar where you can drink cocktails with Absinthe — called Tara 57. Located on Fuxing Lu, just next to Boona 2, and opposite JZ Club, this “cocktail lounge”, as they call it, is a very small place. And that is actually a good thing — it's very cozy. Even more (and this is important for us), there is a coat-rack, so you don’t have to keep your coat on your knees while sipping your drink, so you can actually show that, yes, you did dress up tonight, and, no, you are not wearing jeans again. But the coat rack at Tara 57 was ridiculously small (or maybe our coat is ridiculously large?), and it kept falling on us, which spoiled our visit just a little bit.
