Around Shanghai: Tourism, charity and the working class

  • Somebody from ABC News has offered up her ways to see Shanghai on a "shoestring." Classic offenders Yu Yuan, Xintiandi and Nanjing Road are there, but what do you think of her other ideas? [ABC News]
  • Roots & Shoots have told us that the Linkin Park concert did a little more good than just rockin' out the populace. 7RMB from tickets sold in Shanghai and Macau were donated to the charity's Million Tree Project - resulting in 6,597 trees to be planted next April.
  • Zhang Ziyi was hanging out in our fair city yesterday to help launch the Omega 2009 Constellation watch collection at SOGO. She got the opportunity to "delve deeply into her fascination with watchmaking." Zhang! We never knew you loved to tinker! [Vialuxe]

Yes, we know the big piece of music news this week is that Linkin Park is coming to town. The super popular Nu-metal alt-rock-rap band is playing Shanghai Stadium on Saturday, and though (according to mypiao) all the cheapie tickets have sold out, you can probably still get a nose bleed seat for 1000RMB or 1600RMB. Since that's an embarrassing portion of our salary, we'll probably be skipping out on the actual concert and hoping Chester Bennington and friends bring the after party to one of our regular late night haunts.

So Linkin Park is performing this Saturday, August 15, at Shanghai Stadium (if this news somehow caught you by surprise, you can still buy tickets either at the Shanghai culture site or on mypiao, which lets you choose your seat) and as little as we personally appreciate their music, we did want to point out the excellent job they've been doing warming up their Chinese fans.

Around Shanghai: No more airplane temperature checks, but we're getting a Wall St. Bull and Linkin Park!

  • Shanghai has decided to stop on-board aircraft passenger temperature checks, to the dismay of budding photographers hoping to document the bizarre hazard suit teams. [Shanghai Daily]
  • Mudwrestling at Martini Bar? Those are two things we thought never would really mix, but it somehow happened. [SmartShanghai]
  • What a load of bull. Shanghai's planning on building a bigger version of Wall St.'s charging bull statue to be placed on the waterfront. It'll mark the tail end of China's Year of the Ox and... we guess, be auspicious somehow. [The Age]

No problems with Chinese censors this time, it's actually due to lead singer Chester Bennington's back injury. We're not sure if the Mayday segment of the concert will still go ahead or how ticket refunds will play out. It'll be interesting to note the proportion of Linkin Park vs. Mayday fans though. Well, 2007 is pretty much over. This Shanghaiist has never really been a big New Year's person, maybe because we always end up the odd one out at midnight or the one that has to break up the drunken fights that erupt. But, in the spirit of the season we have decided to do that traditional (way over done) recap of the past year. 2007 was a big year for music in Shanghai and below are our picks for 2007...and of course this list is biased, memories are subjective to each person and the most memorable shows for me usually tend to be because of personal involvement at some level.

On a windy and freakin' cold night (yesterday), Linkin Park finally played their long awaited China show... and Shanghaiist has to admit that the turnout was really impressive. Not a complete sellout, but close... and HongKou stadium can hold more than 28,000 people, which is triple the capacity of the Shanghai Grand Theater. Out of all the big named foreign bands we have seen play in China, this by far had the best attendance. A...

The weekend is finally here, and despite the buzz surrounding Linkin Park on Sunday, there are plenty of other shows that are also worth checking out. Friday, Yuyintang warms things up for Linkin Park fans with four local nu-metal bands strutting their stuff and letting out their best screams. While over at 4Live, Pixel Toy, from Hong Kong, provide an eccentric mix of Cantonese pop electronica. Opening for them is Banana Monkey. Phreaktion in celebration...

Seems like the event a lot of people are talking about is the upcoming Linkin Park concert this Sunday. From what we have heard there are still some tickets available (from Emma ticketing) but supposedly the event has sold extremely well. If that's true, it's impressive, considering this show is being held in Hongkou Stadium, a venue three times the size of the Shanghai Grand Stage. We have also heard lots of people knocking the...

Well, it's been in the rumor mill for a long time, and it now looks like it's finally happening. Linkin Park, in the middle of a world tour, promoting their new (blahhh) album, will be playing at Hongkou Stadium on November 18th. Tickets are rumored to be selling fast and can be purchased here, but for shows like this there always seem to be an endless abundance of ticket scalpers selling tickets (beware the fakes) before the performance.

What have we, what have we, what have we done to deserve this?

Now that all the fuss and excitement surrounding Robin Gibb and Air Supply has died down, what do we have to live for during the coming cold and brutal winter months in Shanghai? In addition to our beloved electric blankets and space heaters, there's going to be a little something for everyone to look forward to as we plunge into the cold.

Fans of rap and hip-hop, take this down: Jay-Z is coming to Shanghai. Probably. The Grammy-winning rapper reportedly will be performing at the Hongkou Soccer Stadium on Monday, October 23, as part of a tour that will also see him making stops in Taipei and Seoul, according to Shanghai Daily.
