Music: Indie China Showcase at Yu Yin Tang

If you're still coherent after our July 4 Shanghaiist + Boxing Cat Brewery Party this Saturday, head over to Yu Yin Tang for their Indie China Showcase... because nothing follows burgers and beer on July 4th quite like some experimental post-indie math rock that makes you gaze at your shoes.

Jue Festival starts today

Just one week in and 2009 has been largely dull, grey, and wet. Thankfully then, the good people at Split Works have put together a ten day long festival of art and music to warm our cockles - starting today. According to the organisers, Jue Festival is "an excuse to leave your hidey-hole and experience a punk show, an art installation, and everything in between", which sounds pretty good to us. The festival (which is also taking place in Beijing), will showcase some of Shanghai's best creative talent and is hosting a diverse set of artists and performers.

Maximilian Hecker is pretty big in China, having played a few well attended shows in the past. With German Music Council meeting in Guangzhou there has been a spike in German artists hitting Shanghai. Hecker plays Tuesday night at the Zhi Jiang Dream Factory in what will be a very intimate show. Things get started around 8:30pm and tickets are RMB280.

For any one who (us included) who missed the eArts festival opening last weekend in Shanghai with free performances by Dead J and others, tonight is your chance at redemption. Screen Play, a mashup of film footage and computer animation, is performed to by Top Floor Circus, Elliott Sharp and fellow musicians. Taking place in Xujiahui Park, things kick off at 7:30pm and the best part....it is all free.

While the big news this week was the postponement of the Kayne West concert, Shanghaiist was busy contemplating what gigs to check out on Friday. Tonight there is a new(ish) bar getting in on the live music action. Bee Dees bar on Dagu road is playing host to Hard Queen with a free show and we are curious to find out what this bar is all about. There has been some confusion over where the Shy Tall Mighty, an old school punk band, is playing this weekend. Originally we saw postings for them out at Live Bar but more recently fliers have been appearing having the concert placed at Yuyintang, which is where we will be.

The one show that shouldn't be missed this weekend is by a local band that you have probably seen a dozen times, Boys Climbing Ropes. Friday night these stalwarts in the underground live scene are celebrating the release of their debut EP with a party at Windows Tembo. A great chance to show support for a band that (along with the many friends they bring) have helped keep some of the smaller venues alive through lean times. Oh, and if you need even more reasons to go, Angry Jerks are in town to open for them...and there is no cover charge.
