Photos: Friend or Foe murders bassist on stage

             + 1 more

Let’s be honest, the music scene in Shanghai is weak. The endless parade of has been 60’s bands going through the motions, and the infinite supply of “world class” djs who in all truthfulness could just be pressing play on their iPods, gets pretty old, pretty fast. So it was a nice change of pace to drop by LOgO’s new venue and enjoy an old fashioned do it yourself rock show complete with sweat, blood, and alcohol. more ›

New LOgO location is next to Tianzifang

Well color me surprised: LOgO has found itself a new spot at 107 Sinan Lu near Taikang Lu, just a block away from the sprawling cafe-dom of Tianzifang. According to the guys at Lune, they'll be taking over the old Sound Blue space and turning it into the divey joint we all knew and loved. Still - we're hesitant to get too attached: Luwan district is not exactly known for its love of loud noises and big crowds in the middle of the night. more ›

UPDATE: Yuyintang closing for renovations, Mao Livehouse still alive

UPDATE: Yuyintang closing for renovations, Mao Livehouse still alive

It's looking pretty bleak for the local music scene this winter. Yuyintang has announced plans to undergo renovations, closing in January and reopening as late as March. I'm thinking they could do without the backwards sloping floor (somehow tiny Asian girls always get stuck back there) and those elevated tables in the back. Who sits there anyway? more ›

Gallery: 67 drawers of ordinary China

             + 8 more

We arrived at 696 Weihai Lu, Building 11, Room #409, not too sure what to expect. We had heard some rumblings about a Chinese medicine cabinet and a collection of “ordinary things.” What we discovered was a marvelous packrat’s paradise. All sorts of knickknacks and obscure treasures were strewn around the workspace. Off to the side stood the magnificent Cabinet of Curiosities, beckoning one to open its secretive drawers. more ›

LOgO to shut down in ten days?!

LOgO to shut down in ten days?!

We thought that with the end of Expo coming, things would get easier for bars around the city. Not so it seems! Not only is Shanghai Studio having troubles staying open - apparently LOgO is too. SmartShanghai reports that the bar has been given an ultimatum to close down in ten days. Says the owner: "Too many complaints = Can't get the bar license. Sad." Indeed. It was one of my favorite late night venues - playing fooseball at four in the morning anywhere else just won't feel the same. more ›

Yes, nightlife is going to suck during the Shanghai Expo

Yes, nightlife is going to suck during the Shanghai Expo

Yep, our worst fears have come true. Shanghai's nightlife is looking set to suck during the Expo period as officials get strict on clubs and bars across the city. more ›

Is nightlife going to suck during the Shanghai Expo?

Is nightlife going to suck during the Shanghai Expo?

As you may have heard, the gig at LOgO last weekend was shut down, and this weekend, the police are continuing to make their presence felt ahead of the Shanghai Expo. Jake Newby writes:

Last night at around half past nine, police showed up at Yuyintang and told them the planned gig for that night (local folk artist Wu Ji) would not be going ahead. No real reason was given, they simply asked to speak to the manager and asked to see the venue's licenses. Audience members (there were around 20-30 people there at the time, not a huge crowd) were told that the gig was cancelled and that they needed to leave the venue. The authorities then confiscated equipment from Yuyintang - the cash tills and everything from the sound desk, including the computer. Tonight's Pinkberry EP release has been "postponed" according to a notice from the band, though they will still be at the venue at 9pm tonight to give out postcards and to meet any disappointed fans who show up expecting a gig. more ›

Bars: DADA opening for real now

Bars: DADA opening for real now

A new Changning district bar will be rounding out a trifecta of cool places to go on Xinfu lu (the other two being, of course, established indie outposts LOgO and Anar): it's called DADA and it's the pet project of Antidote dude Michael Ohlsson. more ›

Live Music This Weekend: Joyside, The Mushrooms and RandomK(e)

This weekend is all about hero worship. Miserable Faith are the kind of metal band that causes diehard fans to get their name and logo tatooed across their bodies; Joyside's Bian Yuan sexy swagger is enough to make you weak at the knees; while Shanghai's own folk heroes Dan Shapiro of The Rogue Transmission and Pu Pu of The Mushrooms will also be in action building their own cult followings. Last weekend may have been a quiet one, but the next few days are anything but. more ›

Interview: Miyo Myo ghost rocking Live Bar and LOgO

Ever heard of Ghost rock? We hadn't either until Berlin-based outfit Mio Myo stepped into town. The four person group, consisting of Uwe Eger, Thomas Authenried, Benni Pollach, and Michael Angerer, first formed in mid-2005, and have been making their mix of electro, guitar-based indie and pop sounds ever since. more ›

Live Music This Weekend: Hedgehog, Happy Avenue, and Mio Myo

The last few weeks have seen a steady stream of great gigs on the Shanghai live scene, something that is set to continue this weekend. Does this mean that the city needs more gig venues? We're not so sure, but there are a few signs of some more live options coming our way. First, a certain underground rehearsal studio has started putting on the occasional show and will host Torturing Nurse's 5 year anniversary in a few weeks. Second, Soma - the people behind the Indie Top label, which hosts bands such as Momo and The Mushrooms - are reported to be looking at opening a live venue as well. Of course, this is a sign of the increase in recent months in the number of talented local bands capable of putting on a great live show, but we'll wait to see whether such expansion is sustainable. more ›

Live Music This Weekend: Young Knives, Oliver, and girls, girls, girls

Live Music This Weekend: Young Knives, Oliver, and girls, girls, girls

This week's big music story in Shanghai has clearly been the Oasis debacle (even if some people insist on misreporting it). Local music hacks have really gone to town on the British theme, cracking out puns like they were auditioning for a job with The Sun and even indulging in some classic tabloid-style "exclusive" wars and bitchiness. more ›

2008 State: Electronic music's mis-programmed year

2008 State: Electronic music's mis-programmed year

2008 Anno Domini / Year of the Rat will be remembered as a difficult one for China in general. Its effects were felt by all, including those involved in Shanghai's numerous musical scenes. It was a year in which artists, promoters and fans had to deal with even more obstacles and barriers than usual in their quest to generate culture and make the whole metropolis live up to its reputation as one of Asia's most dynamic and happening cities. more ›

Videos: TooKoo at LOgO STD Party

After Windows Underground, we wanted to check out Anar but were turned away at the door because we weren't exclusive enough. Good for us, we walked down the street to LOgO and caught Beijing dance rock band, TooKoo in the heat of action. They sang entirely in English and gave an excellent show that got the crowd all riled up and hysterical. more ›
