Death toll mounts for mountaineers

Death toll mounts for mountaineers

It's not been a good month for climbers in Sichuan Province. Ok, that's an understatement. It's been a damn awful month. At the beginning of July, the body of accomplished twice-climber-of-Everest Christine Feld-Boskoff was discovered on the remote mountain peak of Genyan Massif, half a year after the body of her partner in mountain-climbing was found (we told you how the two prominent mountain-climbers went missing here and here). Boskoff was believed to have died in an avalanche. Then, only days ago, government officials announced the discovery of Lonely Planet writer Andrew Clem Lindenmayer, found dead at Riwuqie Peak, 4,600 metres above sea level. And these are not Sichuan's only fatal findings – some simply only managed to make news footnotes, such as the uncovering of the body of a Japanese climber, who went missing 26 years ago. more ›

Shanghai the 16th cheapest city for budget travellers?

Shanghai the 16th cheapest city for budget travellers?

Inspired by the latest Mercer HR rankings of the world's most expensive cities for expats, Rob Meyer of the GoBudgetTravel blog (a pretty new site apparently ... but we still need a proxy to access it for some reason) has put together a similar ranking of the least-expensive cities in the world for budget travellers. more ›

So, can you buy a <em>Lonely Planet China</em> in Shanghai or what?

So, can you buy a Lonely Planet China in Shanghai or what?

Earlier this week, we stated that "you can't buy Lonely Planet China in China." A Flickr user in Beijing showed this to be untrue and asked: "Can we start talking about *real* problems now?" OK, here's our real problem: Where in Shanghai can we buy a Lonely Planet China? We have seen Lonely Planet Shanghai on sale here, but never the big one. A couple months ago a friend was embarking on a long trip through the Mainland and he searched all of Shanghai for Lonely Planet's China guidebook. No dice. Was he just unlucky? Was every store in town out of stock? Or are there stores we don't know about? more ›

Shanghaiist 80s Happy Hour Photos: Come on down!

The above slideshow contains 51 party photos, all but four of which were taken by Peijin, who got glammed up for the occasion (we're assuming it was for the occasion). He's not the only one who got into the spirit of me-decade decadence: There was Ann, whose pink leggings earned her three tickets to Saturday's White Heat Party at the Dynamic Crystal Yacht Club; Tom, whose Rick Ocasek look was good enough to win some sexy men's underwear from MANifesto; and finally, Laura, from Manchester, England, whose Cyndi-Lauper-inspired outfit was impressive -- but, honestly, we awarded her the bottle of Solid XS Vodka, donated by Freelance, mostly because we got the feeling she would beat us up if we didn't. (And ladies, before you send us angry emails, Shamus was ineligible for all awards because he is a Shanghaiist contributor.) more ›

Shanghai <em>Lonely Planet</em>'s No. 1 'city on the rise'

Shanghai Lonely Planet's No. 1 'city on the rise'

The folks over at Lonely Planet emailed to let us know that our fair city has been named the number one "City on the Rise" for travellers in 2006, according to their new Bluelist book. Bluelist, which is indeed blue, covers 2006 and 2007, so we'll still be on the rise heading into the Olympics. Here's how they describe the Bluelist: more ›

Shanghai gets some closure

Shanghai gets some closure

Chinese cities are notorious for their pace of change. In particular, restaurants and bars tend to open and close with stunning speed. The editors of Lonely Planet must have a nightmare on their hands trying to keep track of it all. In fact, Shanghaiist’s edition of LP -- which we think has only just been superseded -- includes entries for Rollo di Pollo (a pizza restaurant at the back of M on the Bund) and Shanghai Sally’s, among other anachronisms. And last year, Time Out released a Shanghai guide which, in the space of about two or three pages, mentioned Cotton’s, Red on Anfu Lu, the Kiwi Bar and a bunch of other venues that had already sadly departed. (Okay, nobody was too sad about the Kiwi closing). more ›
