Tonight: People's Republic of Comedy improv show fundraiser for the Japanese earthquake

The news this past week has been overcast with the horrific unfurling of events from the Japanese earthquake. We just got this in our inbox, but one way you can support the Japanese earthquake relief efforts is by turning up at The People's Republic of Comedy improv show tonight. The comedy group is donating 100% of the show's ticket sales to the tsunami and earthquake victims in Japan. more ›

Where to watch Super Bowl XLV in Shanghai

Where to watch Super Bowl XLV in Shanghai

The Steelers face off with the Packers in the Super Bowl this year and the game kicks off at 7:30am on Monday morning (Shanghai time.) Because of that fortuitus convergence of Super Bowl with the CNY holiday, there will thankfully be far fewer people heading to work drunk around noon on Monday. We mentioned a few places to watch the game in our Weekendist, but thought you guys could use a better roundup of all the breakfast and booze deals. For all bars listed below, I'd recommend getting there as early as possible if you want a place to sit. more ›

Malone's St Patrick's Week Menu: Ma always said never drink on an empty stomach

Malone's St Patrick's Week Menu: Ma always said never drink on an empty stomach

Yes, St. Patrick's is tomorrow. And if the parade on Saturday didn't whet your appetite for some good pub grub, I don't know what will. It certainly did for us, and isn't it lucky that we had a chance to sample one of the delectable Paddy-themed menus around town? Isn't it even luckier that the menu we sampled, Malone's on Tongren Lu, was well worth every penny? more ›

Photos: New England Patriots cheerleaders in Shanghai

             + 7 more

Last week, the New England Patriot Cheerleaders visited Malone's just a few days before the Super Bowl. The girls, showed off their dance moves, signed various Patriot paraphenalia for adoring fans, and made some predictions about who would win this year's football showdown. Turns out they were right: Good job, New Orleans Saints. And good job, ladies, for getting it right on the money. more ›

Malone's insane burger deal: 50RMB for burger + pint

Malone's insane burger deal: 50RMB for burger + pint

When Blue Frog moved away from its Tongren Lu location, we shed a single tear for the Jing'an district's best burger bargain. Little did we know that three months later, an even better deal would pop up... at Malone's of all places. more ›

Longevitist: 10 Shanghai bars/restaurants that have lasted the decade

Longevitist: 10 Shanghai bars/restaurants that have lasted the decade

In a city like Shanghai, new openings are aplenty and sudden closings even more so. It seems that the evanescent nature of the city's restaurants and bars make it so that when something stays open for over two years, it ought to be counted as an old stand by. We are, of course, talking about expat establishments - there are tons of old Chinese restaurants that have stood the test of time, probably because the Shanghainese Shanghai population is a little less transient. And yet, somehow some of these places have managed to survive the volatility of the city. They may have changed their appearance, they may have moved, but all and all they're still here, giving anybody who hasn't been here since 2000 something at least somewhat familiar to cling to. We tip our hat off to them - for better or worse, they haven't quit for at least ten years. Listed in no particular order or importance, ten places that have been here since at least 1999. more ›

Around Shanghai: Malones, martinis and Moreno!

Around Shanghai: Malones, martinis and Moreno!

  • Malone's has written in to tell us that in the 15 years (count 'em!) they've been in Shanghai, they've sold a whopping 750,000 burgers. That's a lot of meat! Congratulations, Malone's, from all our deliciously clogged expat hearts.
  • Six of the best bartenders in town compete to make the most delicious martinis they can. We’re especially curious about how the Minty Gin Martini and the Fig Martini taste. Mmmm… [Cityweekend]
  • Speaking of drinks, Chef/owner of el Willy, Guillermo Trullas Moreno, is trying his hand at mixology at a new place called el Coctel... two floors up from The Shelter. Soft opening is expected to be in late November. [Urbanatomy]
