Last weekend, we told you that Yahoo! is now apologizing for not telling the full truth to Congress at the February 2006 hearing where Yahoo! was taken to task for its role in the conviction of Chinese journalist Shi Tao. Now both Republicans and Democrats have launched scathing attacks on Yahoo. San Mateo Democrat Tom Lantos has called Yahoo "moral pygmies", and New Jersey Republican Chris Smith compared Yahoo’s cooperation with the Chinese government to companies that cooperated with Nazi Germany during World War II.

In the latest edition of Sexy Beijing, Sufei hits Shanghai and asks her psychoanalyst and historian dad if her obsession with Chinese men has anything to do with her relationship with him and his relationship with her mom. Turns out that they have a really fascinating family history! Sufei's grandfather was a practising psychiatrist in Hamburg and his brother was the Chief Rabbi of Augsburg and everyone was forced to flee Nazi Germany when her father was just a baby, so he spent the early years of his life in China (and he's got the pictures to prove it!). As we all know, many Jews chose to come to Shanghai because it was the best and safest place to go on about their business. Of course their party didn't last long but that's another story. But okay we'll quit talking for now so you can go back in time with Sufei into the Shanghai of 1930's.
"Only in Shanghai" is what Shanghaiist has been muttering ever since happening upon this article in the Shanghai Daily -- an area of Hongkou district which housed tens of thousands of Jews that fled Nazi Germany and WWII Europe is going to be turned into "the city's second Xintiandi with Jewish culture and characteristics". There will be kosher restaurants, museums, but we don't know yet if there will be a kosher McDonald's cafe or kosher Starbucks, or if the movie theater will serve as a venue for cutting edge films from great Israeli directors like Amos Gitai or Joseph Cedar.
