You have to be living under a particularly obscure rock if you've never heard of the mega giant Twitter rip-off that is “Sina Weibo.” Heck, even Radiohead and Tom Cruise know about it.

Shanghaiist in the New York Times!
Okay, I can't help it. When this little blog gets mentioned by a newspaper somewhere, I get a big fuzzy feeling and it makes my day. So here we are, as at least one little outlet on the internet to learn about Shanghai in a recent New York Times article, "Bloggers Open an Internet Window on Shanghai."

m97 Gallery and Jiang Zhi: Blinded by the lights
Last Saturday, Shanghaiist was invited to attend the unveiling of Shanghai's newest gallery space, m97. Once we negotiated the tricky shared building entrance, we made our way to the second floor and was immediately impressed by the physical space and airy nature of the gallery. The grand opening featured an exhibition of by emerging Beijing photographer and artist Jiang Zhi titled "Things Would Turn Simpler Once They Happened". Immediately we had diametrically opposing thoughts. "How were these photos taken?", and "I don't quite get it...". We wished that our interpretation of the photographic exhibition was as simple as the exhibition's title, but we assume this is the art part of the exhibition. Here's a little about Jiang Zhe (pictured below) and his exhibit from information posted by m97.

ElectroScape at the Thumb
Rising up from the soulless Pizza Hut, Starbucks, and McDonald's doldrums of "Thumb Plaza" in Pudong is the Shanghai Zendai Museum of Modern Art's international new media exhibition, ElectroScape. Only in operation for six weeks, it has created one of the first avant-art footprints in Shanghai with its premier. Don't know about you, but creating a discourse between the digital and organic usually makes Shanghaiist's stomach go to tizzies. While this exhibition falls well short of inducing a state of tizziness, it is well worth checking out if you enjoy such exercises in mental masturbation. And if you want to support the Shanghai art scene, it's the place to be before August 25.
