Club D2 presents Shanghai's first gay cruise party

Sail's up tomorrow night in Shanghai as the boys from Club D2 present the city's first ever gay cruise party. The boat leaves 8pm on the dot so we recommend you be there with your posse by 7.30pm if you don't want to be left behind. After that it's 3 hours of non-stop action on this cruise-to-(Nanpu Bridge?) with DJ Seth Cooper of Austin on the decks. Tickets are priced at RMB300 each and includes free flow Bacardi for the first hour, but tonight is your last chance at getting those tickets at the pre-sale rate of RMB250.

Interview: Pho-ntastic French beatmaker Onra

Maybe you've never heard of Onra or Arnaud Bertrand but you may actually recognize one of his songs, "The Anthem", which was featured in a Coca Cola ad for the Beijing Olympics starring 3D animated versions of Yao Ming and LeBron James.

Last Friday at Yuyintang, Nosaj Thing shone in his beat-heavy live set laced with synth sounds and slaps amid an obvious underlying hip hop influence. He worked the Akai Mpd-32 controller, laptop and audio interface and yes the crowd lapped it up.

What's up with the Electrograss Festival? UPDATED

UPDATE: sometimes-contributor Sam Jacobs wrote in to tell us exactly what was up with the Electrograss festival:

Interview: Nosaj Thing

Nosaj Thing, a.k.a. Jason Cheung, is a L.A.-based music producer whose geeky charm at first sight deceptively conceals his sinister and innovative musical agendas. At the age of 13, he molded his father's rudimentary PC that struggled with even Word documents into a Frankestein Intel Celeron home studio.

Turkish Hackers hate Muse (the nightclub)!

The poor Shanghai nightlife institution has been hit by hackers! Specifically, Muslim Turkish hackers who would really love it if you stopped Israel from being involved in wars. What do the two have to do to with each other? Probably absolutely nothing (we've heard most hackers just troll the internet looking for unsecured sites), but wouldn't it be aMuseing if there was an actual connection there?

Bon Bon is gone gone?

Alas, it seems like Huai Hai Lu stalwart Bon Bon may have closed up shop over the weekend, and the only guys who noticed were SmartShanghai. It's Thursday and the club still has to issue official notice of the closure, but according to the nightlife website, they're planning on moving locations. But where will Shanghai's trance-loving expat high school crowd go until then?! WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN?

We know you already look forward to our Pencil This Ins and Live Music Previews, but now we're making having fun in this city even easier for you. From now on, all worthwhile events in Shanghai can be easily viewed on our constantly updated Shanghaiist calendar. It's curated by real humans, only includes events we'd actually consider going to, and it's powered by Google - which means you can add events you like to your own Google calendars. Have an event you think should be included? Email us at cal@shanghaiist.com.

Since Shanghai was named one of the five most improved places for gay tolerance it seems that nights around town have become bolder about nailing their rainbow colours to the mast.

Pencil this in: Midweek clubbing edition

For those who can't wait for the weekend, here are a couple of interesting club nights to break up a cold, wet week.

Samba in Shanghai: Chino Latino Tres

Shanghai's premier Latin music party (perhaps Shanghai's only Latin music party, though that doesn't make it any less premier) is back!

Up-and-coming electronic hip-hop producer Dorian Concept, otherwise known as Oliver Thomas Johnson, will take to the stage come this Thursday at The Shelter. Having developed his own distinctive twisted sound, the 24-year-old Austrian has just released his debut LP and performed at this year's Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards a few weeks back.

See you guys tonight at the Shanghaiist Valentine's Party!

Happy Valentine's everyone! Check out this bouquet of roses that we received recently... in our email. We're not sure if we've ever seen any bouquet more beautiful, more expensive, or more romantic than this one in China, but it sure did make us blush. Maybe someday we will find a rich boyfriend that will send something like that to us? Just maybe?

Popular bar matron Cotton Ding, owner of Shanghaiist favorite Cotton's, sits down with Daedalum Films to talk about her story - how she left her home in rural Hunan for the big city, the lessons she learned along the way to becoming a successful bar owner, and what challenges she sees on the horizon.

Shanghaiist Valentine's Party: Rendezvous with us on top of the world this Saturday night

Yes, that's what the top of the world looks like, at least from the top floor of Le Royal Meridien Shanghai, the tallest building in Puxi. As you've heard, we're going to remake this bar on the 65th level into a giant bedroom for our slumber party this Saturday evening, and if you've never been up there, don't miss it for the world.

Get naughty with Shanghaiist this Valentine's!

Valentine's is coming up this Saturday, and if you're still not sure where to spend it, worry not! Shanghaiist is converting the bar on the top floor of Le Meridien into a giant bedroom with a magnificent 360-degree view of Shanghai and inviting everyone over for a massive slumber party!

Legendary hip hop DJ Stretch Armstrong of Steve Aoki's DIM MAK label played an energetic set at Bonbon last Friday. Playing with local DJs, Mr. Armstrong put on hits to please the masses and get down, dirty New York style. Staple Bonbon tomfoolery ensued with some puking, some dancing, and some sleeping at the booths (you know who you are! go home!). Check out his Myspace for a recap

While most of the Hengshan Lu bars spend their time trying to attract customers with Thursday night offerings of "little girls and little boys" (no joke), The Melting Pot has been putting on a weekly show of Inner Mongolian country bluegrass blues players named Tom and Jerry. The musical super duo mix authentic guitar chops with mandolin, fiddle and a pleasing Chinese drawl to warm even the most frigid of nights. With the help of talented local musicians, Tom and Jerry recreate anything from Johnny Cash's "Cocaine Blues" to a convincing southern-style take on Nirvana's "Something in the Way". While the bar could use a price check (we're not there to show how rich we are--or wish to be), the setting is both comfortable and spacious. Come check them out at The Melting Pot on Thursdays, starting at 9:30 PM. Definitely not your average Shanghai (or Kentuckian) Thursday night.

Best and worst party flyers in 2008

SmartShanghai has put together a compilation of the best and worst event flyers found on their website last year. Our favourite one has to be this flyer you see on the right, designed by I Love Shanghai for a party last January. We're sure the party went down well (no pun intended) on many a moustached man and cunning linguist in town.

2008 Anno Domini / Year of the Rat will be remembered as a difficult one for China in general. Its effects were felt by all, including those involved in Shanghai's numerous musical scenes. It was a year in which artists, promoters and fans had to deal with even more obstacles and barriers than usual in their quest to generate culture and make the whole metropolis live up to its reputation as one of Asia's most dynamic and happening cities.

Christmas is over, and like many others, Shanghaiist is still nursing a hangover from all the holiday cheer received on our trip back home. Lucky for us, we came back at a perfect time, with many exciting gigs coming up in January. Here is a look at the shows we don't plan on missing out on......

Thanks to everyone who came out Saturday night to celebrate with us. And a special thanks to Cotton's, American Craft Beer Partners and, of course, Santa Claus for making it all possible. Happy Holidays!

Beautiful Thing, Shanghai's first gay play directed by Michael Darragh, received two standing ovations at the Zhijiang Dream Factory last weekend. The play was followed by a pink tie party organised by Shanghai LGBT in which they crowned their Drag King and Queen of the year.
