The Paint The Town Red Communist Party Party held at Not Me on Friday night was a political and economic success, featuring the Shanghaiist Propaganda Dissemination Committee in attendance, celebrating the Party's 90th Anniversary together with Shanghai's most dedicated Party-loving alcoholics Vanguard Pioneers, in what was a cathartic face-saving success that testified to the vitality and currency the Party still retains amongst the fenqing, eliminating any whisker of doubt regarding the Party's ability to continue onward in its magnanimous rule, New York Times dissident op-ed ninny dogs be damned!

Electrolist: Detroit's Underground Resistance are back
Underground Resistance make a welcome return to Shanghai tomorrow night as guests of the VOID crew at Shelter. For around two decades now their reputation as a militantly anti-mainstream Detroit techno collective has proceeded them from club to club as they drop their spellbinding music.
Le Castle Vania show cancelled... for now
OH NO! To the detriment of all indie electro fans (and the winners of our Le Castle Vania tickets), tonight's Le Castle Vania show has been canceled/postponed. Says the organizers, "Because of last minute VISA problems we are deeply sorry that Dylan won't be able to make it this time round. It is looking very positive that Dylan will be making his way to Shanghai in summer and we'll give you more info on that soon." Still, there WILL be a party at NOT ME tonight anyhow - and they're making entry free and serving some drinks cheaper to "make up for the bad news." Ain't that sweet?
Pencil This In: February 8-12
This week is marching in, and with it comes a wide and wild variety of events to check out, from horrible 90s movies to special burlesque shows to a ballet about Marco Polo.
Weekendist: Hope for Haiti night, comedy & fuzzy critters
Every Friday, Weekendist brings you our picks of the best of what's coming in the next three days.
Our five fave new Shanghai watering holes of 2009
Shanghai has an ephemeral nature: with the breakneck pace of modernization, it seems like the city is a little bit different every day, changing right under our noses. With all that constant progress comes an ever changing cast of cultural venues: every year, we find our favorite places to rest and relax going the way of the collective farm, only to be replaced with entirely new and fascinating ones that catch our attention. We spend a lot of our time exploring the great things our city has to offer, especially the ones that serve us alcohol: to top off our year of intrepid boozing, here's a list of our favorite new bars, clubs and lounges that have popped up over the past year.
Holiday Parties: A very Shanghai Christmas to you
Okay, we’re such terrible poets that even Hallmark holiday cards won’t be including our works anytime soon. Bad rhyming aside, we do empathize: you’re still in Shanghai while most people you know have joined the mass expat exodus and taken off for far-flung lands. But that doesn’t mean you’re going to miss out on the holiday spirit. To help our readers get a fill of red and green cheer this year, we’ve highlighted some of the coolest Christmas parties happening around town. Go to one, or make appearances at all - there’s no excuse to be alone in Shanghai for the next few nights.
Weekendist: Racy lingerie launch, Lions of Puxi, and the traveling Mao
It's going to be a sunny December weekend - all the better to be out and about! Definitely check out some of our live music suggestions at night, but just in case you’re feeling geeky/artsy/cultural during the day, we’ve outlined some of this weekend's coolest/quirkiest-sounding art exhibitions, fashion launches and community events that will keep you buzzing around town until Sunday evening.
Weekendist: Unleashed college students, free alcohol, and a 'cutie bootie'
Just in case nothing mentioned in Shanghaiist's music preview struck your fancy for this weekend, we took a little time to outline some of this weekend's most promising parties, exhibitions, and performances. And believe us when we say there's a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving weekend...
Heart Attack: Starring Jake Newby
We've told you before of Indie Heart Attack, the weekly music event at Not Me which gets a bunch of Shanghai's music-loving mavens to show off their playlists. This Thursday, they're welcoming former Shanghaiist contributor Jake Newby to man the tables!
...and the winners of the Toxic Avengers tickets are:
Anke Stockburger and Han Fei, who were the first people who emailed us about free tickets. Thanks! Your names will be on the guest list - just show up and enjoy the show! As for the rest of you who emailed in, we highly recommend you come anyway. The Toxic Avenger (myspace here) is an awesome act to catch. He'll be playing at Not Me (21 Dongping Lu) on Friday night, starting at 10pm. Check out this and other shows you can see around Shanghai this weekend in our midweek music preview.
Video: Halloween 2009 Zombie Walk
We're still bummed out that Halloween is over, so we figured we'd stretch out the mystique of the holiday by featuring this video, shot by contributor Jeremy Breningstall, of what our terrorizing on the Zombie Walk actually looked like.
Photos: Shanghaiist Halloween Party 2009 @ Not Me
Here are the rest of the photos (if you're looking for the Zombie Walk stuff, check it out here. Thank you to MNO, R3, Baijiu Robot and Kidplastik for their awesome sets and that crazy live show. Thank you to Not Me for keeping up with the hundreds of people that crowded the bar. And most of all, thank you Shanghaiist readers (and friends) who helped populate a super cool, super be-costumed Halloween extravaganza.
Photos: Shanghaiist Halloween Party 2009 ZOMBIE WALK
As with most things in Shanghai, the Zombie Walk started a little later than we had planned. Still, by around 8:45pm, a good crowd of 30 to 50 people had gathered at the corner of Tianping Lu and Hengshan Lu. After making sure everyone had gotten a little yellow bracelet to signify their zombie walking prowess (and to get them into Not Me for free), Shanghaiist Editor Elaine Chow, dressed as a videogame character, rallied the troops and commenced the walk.
Shanghaiist Halloween Costume Contest!
If you're like us, you love Halloween so much that you look forward to it for weeks, dreaming about stuffing yourself with candy and scaring every man, woman and small child in your freak-out radius. But if you're really like us, then you've probably thought a LOT about your costume, but haven't taken the time to travel all the way to Party Monster for your costume, or even log on to Taobao to look for one. Well, it's high time to get on it, because our annual Shanghaiist Halloween Party will have the definitive costume contest in all of Shanghai!
Shanghaiist Halloween Party: ZOMBIE WALK details!
Bwahaha! As Halloween slowly draws closer and closer like a serial killer in a horror movie, Shanghaiist is putting on the scariest garb we can find for our annual, super awesome Halloween Party. If you haven't read about it (or heard about it through the grapevine), we're partnering with Not Me to offer a night packed with horror, fright, and obviously, mayhem aplenty. After all, there's gonna be a costume contest, great music by MNO, R3, Baijiu Robot and Kidplastik, and of course, a mini cityscape for the crushing! So come, or you'll be haunted by it for the rest of your life.
Shanghaiist Halloween Party: Halloween Rampage!
Halloween is Shanghaiist's favorite holiday, by far. And with the spooky season approaching, we spend a lot of time thinking about whether Chinese vampires are more zombie than vampire, the mortifying merits of American style haunted houses and, of course, our annual halloween party. And like always, we're going to hold it down like a rickety door during a zombie attack.
Weekendist: Artist Mao Yanyang, Djs at Dada, Alan Greig's solo choreography
Culture yourself during the day and dance away the night! This weekend has a line up of thoughtful speakers and exhibits, including photographer Thomas Fuesser and painter Mao Yanyang.
International Noise Conspiracy: Cancelled
Oh no! Due to some unforeseen issues with "The Man," Swedish rockers The (International) Noise Conspiracy won't be playing tonight at Yuyintang or at the Modern Sky festival in Beijing this weekend. Word has it they're still in China, so they're definitely still international, but sadly they've been banned from being either noisy or conspiratorial. As a form of consolation, Heart Attack has put together a special Indie night with guest dj's Jeans Team supported by Desert Fuck Eagle & Sacco. It's not the same as INC, but there will be 15 RMB beer all night, and there's even a chance that Dennis Lyxzén might show up.
Interview: Fun Fashions with Frau
If you’ve haven’t already heard, tonight there will be nice a treat for all you fashionistas out there. Ana Frau will be showcasing her new collection from her Frau Ana line as well as hosting a delectable after party, rife with yummy candy and drinks, at the always exciting Not Me bar... We were able to catch the very busy designer while she was still preparing for her upcoming show and badger her with some questions.
