China Heritage Quarterly, a publication covering recent developments related to China's heritage, has turned its focus onto Shanghai this quarter and now it's all online! Inside, you'll find everything from an expose on 1930s Shanghai wild girl Emily "Mickey" Hahn to the harmonizing of Shanghai's history in recent exhibitions around the world. It'll take a while to work through it, and I recommend that you do, but here are three picks I found exceptionally interesting:
China Heritage Quarterly: Shanghai grapples with its own history
A step back in time to celebrate today's Bund re-opening
What better way to commemorate the end to two years of nonstop construction on our beloved Bund than by taking a trip back in time to see how it looked nearly a century before the new traffic tunnel was necessary? The stunning photographs you see before you are culled from Virtual Shanghai: Shanghai Urban Space in Time, a collection of more than 3,000 images edited by Christian Henriot from the Institut Universitaire de France.
Photo of the Day: Remains of Samadhi
"Following a tip from 从无声开始, an emotional book loaded with fonts and personal experiences derived from encounters with old buildings, I went to find Samadhi Temple right outside the Old Town's south border. The temple is said to be first built in 1766 and rebuilt in 1867. It is now used as a storage facility, which has not helped its preservation. The space was divided into bunkers with concrete ramps and partitions, and the original wooden structure has been drowned in cement. I went in unnoticed, but later chatted up the guard. Together we took apart a huge mountain of water bottles in the corner and he showed me carved pillars and egg-shaped rocks with lotus motifs piled underneath."
Pencil This In: January 11 - 15
This week in Shanghai, try out some new things! Whether it be handball or informative sessions on microfinancing or charity auctions (that help everything from migrant children to saving Sichuan's Qiang people from losing their cultural heritage), the city has a lot to offer this week. 'Stateless in Shanghai': Nov. 21 and 22
Shanghai-born Dr. Liliane Willens will be speaking twice this weekend about her newly published book, Stateless in Shanghai at several venues around the city. But first, a word of explanation about what "stateless in Shanghai" really means:

even tops Hong Kong in my view. I then started to uncover the amazing stories of the Club and its significance to Shanghai.”

Historic Shanghai church further ruined by fire
The Shanghai Daily ran just a caption with the attached photo. Here is what they wrote:
Vivienne Tam's Shanghai
Guangdong-born, Hong Kong-raised and New York-based fashion designer Vivienne Tam has been visiting Shanghai twice a year "to find inspiration" for more than 20 years. Tam recently gave Travel and Leisure a look at her "hidden Shanghai." We'll let Shanghaiist readers determine just how "hidden" it really is. Here are the places mentioned in the story:
Shanghai Book Expo
How many times have you found yourself sitting around your living room just itching to attend a local expo? Didn't think so. Well, for those out there who are interested, get those reading glasses ready. If the previously mentioned Sex Expo ("Sexpo"?) isn't quite your cup of naughty tea, then perhaps this might better suit your uptight needs. As reported last week in Shanghai Daily, the 2006 Shanghai Book Fair will be held at the Shanghai Exhibition Center (the former site of Jewish millionaire Silas Hardoon's Old Shanghai garden estate) from August 5 to 11.
Center of Shanghai: Where the hell is it?
Back in February, Wired Magazine ran a story on the center of the USA according to Google Maps. The -ist network of sites, being geographically organized, was quick to pick up on this meme, giving us the center of New York and of Washington D.C..
Notes from the underground: Weekend music picks
Last weekend was quite a stunner, what with Japanese punk, Korean horror-movie music, and a new addition to the C's revival (better than "200 people turning up to DKD wearing mp3 players and dancing in their own heads all night"); but we live in the city where 酒不醉人人自醉 ("people, rather than alcohol, enebriate") and with a population of 13 million, the party doesn't stop so easily. Read on for this week's contributions to our city's tradition of bacchanalia.
