The newest addition to Shanghai nightlight held their grand opening party this past Saturday. If you've visited The Apartment, you'll already have a feel for what The Geisha is like: lounge style, chic venue, but the same old Shanghai clubbing vibes.
Geisha Club: A Japanese-inspired Apartment
Weekendist: The Geisha club opening, Shanghai Fashion Week, Bubba's Chili Cook-off, and a Closet Swap!
If Fashion's Night Out wasn't enough for you, then head down to Fuxing Park to see models strut their stuff @ Shanghai's Fashion Week! We have our Saturday jam packed with the Closet Swap and a MeWellness bootcamp for boobies (i.e. in support of breast cancer), as well as an Oktoberfest for kids. If you're hungry, head over to Bubba's chili cook off (yum!), and end your weekend with a nice block party at the Brownstone on Sunday. And if that's still not enough, head over to our calendar for more.
Weekendist: Zeal and Tantra club openings, Brothers & Sisters charity concert, 1960s film, a crime-solving mystery dinner and more
Two new clubs are opening tonight: Tantra and Zeal. Zeal (which is a completely different venture to a similarly-named Shanghai institution of years gone by) seems to be the more interesting one with its South Bund address. They're even claiming to have the best view of Pudong and the Bund. We're not so sure about that, but it's worth checking out. BEAN, after a fun and very successful scavenger hunt, is now inviting everyone out bowling. Also, O'Malleys has organized a full schedule of live music, games, and raffle prizes to support relief in Japan. And if that's still not enough, head over to our calendar for more.
Apt 302: The Apartment's new disco room opens tonight
It's Friday, Friday. Gotta get down on Friday. Tomorrow is Saturday. And Sunday comes after...wards. Okay sorry, I apologize for that, but in all seriousness, here's something to help you get down this weekend. One of the Yongfu Lu pillars, The Apartment, has just undergone a switch up in management. But more than that, they've taken over the space that used to sit just opposite them and turned it into their new disco room apparently. It opens officially tonight and we'll see it first as an 80's and 90's incarnation, so hope you practiced your sprinkler and your running man.
Party alert: Free drinks and canapes at Vantage magazine's launch this Thursday
Here's another great excuse to stay out after work this Thursday night (the first being happy hour with Ed Wang). Vantage magazine's launch party at Glamour Bar will be providing free flow booze for two hours and sweet canapes -- sounds like a fantastic party to us! We hear that there will be dancers, special performances, and a lucky draw so bring your business card too. But if you wanna RSVP, you need to do that today.
Shanghai Litfest 2011: Schindler's List author Thomas Keneally, Peter Hessler, Amitav Ghosh and a host of literati coming to town
February is such a short month, we're already halfway through now and the Shanghai Litfest is peeking above the horizon.
Tonight: Opening of Cantina Agave Jinqiao!
Pudong-ites rejoice! Shanghai's favourite Mexican restaurant Cantina Agave has made one big leap across the Huangpu River and landed in your neighbourhood! Tonight, they're celebrating their opening from 6-9pm at 357 Hongfeng Road, near Biyun Road (红枫路357号,近碧云路). For just RMB100, you get FREE FLOW Margaritas and Mexican street snacks and 50% of proceeds will go to the Baobei Foundation. Do check it out if you're free.
Sin closed indefinitely, but Shelter open on weekdays!
Two tidbits of nightlife news from SmartShanghai: Sin Lounge, which City Weekend readers named to be one of their favorite places (go figure!), is in a dispute with their landlord and will be closed indefinitely. On the other hand, Shelter had their first week back from the weekday ban. For the last month or so, they've only been allowed to open up on the weekends - now, they get to usher people in on Wednesday and Thursdays as well. So go to Swap Meet next week and celebrate.
Wal-Mart opening up a Sam's Club in Shanghai
Like buying things in bulk? Good! Because Sam's Club is coming to Shanghai. The Shanghai Sam's Club, Wal-Mart's fifth one in China, will by far be the biggest. It'll cover 600,000 square meters and carry over 9,000 products. You can look for it after Christmas - it's set to open on December 28 this year.
Shanghai, it's time to eat the donuts
For those planning on hibernating this winter, it just got easier to add those crucial extra layers of fat. Dunkin' Donuts just opened in Shanghai, much to the delight of Marc van der Chijs and probably many other people. SH mag says, "This is supposed to be store number one of one hundred." SH also suggests our city might be in the midst of a "donut war." Aussie brand Donut King opened this month, as well. Our money is on the Americans.
Shanghai Barbie
Nope, it's not Shanghai Baby, now it's Shanghai Barbie. The massive 3400-square-meter flagship shop at 550 Huai Hai Lu is set to open soon. The tagline: "We Believe in Girls' Dreams" is perhaps the most disturbing aspect. How does Barbie appeal to a Shanghainese girl's dreams? The wish to have blond hair and a boob job?
