Shanghaiist Scrabble Happy Hour @ Cotton's!

We've got a whole new bag of tricks to spice up our semi-monthly Shanghaiist Happy Hour at Cotton's. Well, technically, it's a bag of tiles- Scrabble tiles. After searching in vain for a game of Scrabble and only finding Maonopoly sets, we decided that we would maverick it and just make our own. And since we all know how witty and clever Shanghaiist readers are, we'd like to cordially invite you to join us next Tuesday, October 27 for the first monthly Shanghaiist Scrabble night!

FREE the WAX Bday celebratory interview: Francisco!

So yesterday we interviewed FREE the WAX, the Shanghai-based music group that brings groundbreaking pioneers from around the globe to our city. And now, in return, they've helped us interview the DJ they're bringing over: Francisco.

Interview: FREE the WAX

In case you don't know, FREE the WAX is a Shanghai-based bastard child production dedicated to presenting only the frontline of groundbreaking musical pioneers from across the globe. In preparation for their big anniversary party on Friday at Shelter, we chatted with Leo Messias, one of the founders of the musical expedition, about their exciting year, the effect of world-class DJ's on the Shanghai scene, and their love of old Chinese ladies who exercise in the park.

Tasteless event of the week: 9.11 tribute Tennessee whisky style

We're not sure if this is more insensitive or illogical, but I Love Shanghai is hosting a 9/11 tribute party with Jack Daniels cocktail specials. Normally, we "celebrate" national tragedies with a more solemn half-mast approach, but we guess with good old JD coming to the party, anything could happen! As transplanted New Yorkers, we're kind of offended at the blatant exploitation of September 11th and we're not convinced that 25 yuan whiskey cocktails are how you "keep it real" in these circumstances. Needless to say, we have better things to do on Friday, but if you go, expect a ton of Darryl Worley singalongs, footage of the 2004 Republican National Convention, and if you're lucky, an exclusive screening of World Trade Center with Nick Cage.

Club D2 presents Shanghai's first gay cruise party

Sail's up tomorrow night in Shanghai as the boys from Club D2 present the city's first ever gay cruise party. The boat leaves 8pm on the dot so we recommend you be there with your posse by 7.30pm if you don't want to be left behind. After that it's 3 hours of non-stop action on this cruise-to-(Nanpu Bridge?) with DJ Seth Cooper of Austin on the decks. Tickets are priced at RMB300 each and includes free flow Bacardi for the first hour, but tonight is your last chance at getting those tickets at the pre-sale rate of RMB250.

Three cheers for Qingdao Beerfest!

Looking for an excuse to travel out of Shanghai this August? Maybe you ought to try for the infamous Qingdao International Beer Festival starting next week. From August 15-30, the city of Qingdao will host China's biggest and baddest annual beerfest. The event draws people, brews, and munchies from all over China and the world.

Green Dam protesters celebrate censorware twist [Updated]

The planned protests against the Green Dam Youth Escort turned into celebrations on Wednesday, when Chinese authorities suddenly postponed their order of the infamous censorware program. In turn, Lots of young Chinese netizens gathered to turn their Green Dam anger into a feast.

More on our Shanghaiist + Boxing Cat July 4 Party

As you may have read, Shanghaiist and the Boxing Cat Brewery are teaming up to throw one heckuva American Independence Day party! And as part of that, we're having a raffle and a drinking competition... for charity. A little confused about that last part? Here's our handy explanation on how you can get completely wasted for a good cause.

Mark it down: Shanghaiist + Boxing Cat's July 4 Charity Party

It's only two weeks before we light the candles, break out the red, white and blue and begin celebrating the birthday of the United States of America (be sure to slur “meri” to “murr” for added authenticity). Since we at Shanghaiist are never ones to let a good party opportunity go to waste, we’ve partnered up with The Boxing Cat Brewery to host a good ol’ Fourth of July bash.

Someone in Shanghai hosting mystery warehouse party

Uh oh! Looks like Shanghai's got another mystery event coming its way - and like the disasterously daft and not quite punk last one, it emerged first on Facebook. Unlike that last one though, there doesn't seem to be a big name and a 500RMB charge, just the promise of dancing and drinks at a "REAL WAREHOUSE" right before the Dragon Boat Festival Vacation, put on by the Shanghai Insurgency. Okay, we admit - our curiosity is a little piqued.

Cinco de Mayo Madness: A guide

Happy Cinco de Mayo Shanghai! In a city that doesn't really have a lot of Mexicans, we sure have plenty of ways of celebrating their commemoration day of a battle they won against France! And even the swine flu isn't dampening our spirits (nor should it, now that Mexico says it's feeling better and we've stopped trapping its citizens in quarantine here just because they happen to hold Mexican passports). Places you could hit up tonight include:

Just like we promised, it was a beautiful night over at Cotton's Xinhua Road location. We drank, we chatted, and we gave away a free night at the Shangri-La (thanks to Ctrip.com) to one lucky winner. Be sure to come on out to our next happy hour on May 12!

Interview: DJ Kentaro scratchin' up the Shelter for the second time

For more local events, visit the Shanghaiist Calendar.
DJ Kentaro knows a thing or two about scratching up a storm and creating a wild night out. Lauded as one of his country's best hip hop artists, he's won the DMC Japan Championships twice. In 2002, he became one of the first Asians to take home first place at the World DMC Championship and was also the first champion in the history of the contest to get a perfect score.

We know you already look forward to our Pencil This Ins and Live Music Previews, but now we're making having fun in this city even easier for you. From now on, all worthwhile events in Shanghai can be easily viewed on our constantly updated Shanghaiist calendar. It's curated by real humans, only includes events we'd actually consider going to, and it's powered by Google - which means you can add events you like to your own Google calendars. Have an event you think should be included? Email us at cal@shanghaiist.com.

Sometimes your new electronic gadget isn't as new as you'd think it would be. One patron of the Carrefour in Jinqiao got a bit of a shock when he opened his “brand new” camcorder and found over 30 minutes of the Jinqiao Carrefour staff's Spring Festival Christmas party on it. Obama Inauguration Party at Glamour Bar

Luckily for us here in Shanghai, U.S. President-Elect Barack Obama's inauguration happens at around the midnight hour. That means, basically, that it's completely acceptable to drink to this historical event

Here you go, Shanghai. A short interview with Jeans Team, one of the hottest electronic duos in Germany, who will be playing two shows this weekend. Check them out at the MOCA tomorrow night or head to the infamous STD parties, at Logo, where they will be getting the masses into a frenzied lather.

So this is the weekend in October we have been waiting for. A weekend where there are actually a slew of gigs worth checking out. On Friday Voodoo Kungfu from Beijing will be at Live Bar. We happened to catch them last year and despite not being a huge metal fan enjoyed the spectacle of watching the band dress up as Chinese ghosts, shamans and throw funeral money in the air, while using traditional Chinese instruments and throat singing in their repertoire. If all that might seem like a bit much for you then try Yuyintang where Miniless records is bringing us another night of experimental shoe gazer noise. Isis, CDGE, Tinnitus Movement and more will be on stage to induce waves of depression and melancholy to crash across the crowd.

The guys from multi-disciplinary design studio Jellymon have done it again, this time they've rounded up 20-plus artists specialized in street art, streetwear, illustration, design and photography for a fun art show at The Source.

If any of you have been in Shanghai for over 3 years you might remember a time when Ark Livehouse in Xintiandi was one of the few bastions of live music. Slowly disappearing from the scene and limping along for the past 3 years with the rare live show, Ark is finally calling it quits. Saturday they will hold one last show featuring some of Shanghai's oldest bands, including The Honeys, Blue Garden and Crystal Butterfly. If you haven't been to Ark this is your last chance so get off your ass and see what the Shanghai rock scene was like way back in 2004.

With all the mud slinging going on between the Chinese and Western media, Shanghaiist is looking forward to some mindlessly good fun without the political positioning this Saturday with dance punkers You Say Party! We Say Die!.

With the holiday season in full swing things usually slow down in the music scene. But this weekend there are a few shows that should get us through to the New Year.

For a second straight week Shanghaiist has missed our Friday deadline, oops. The good news is that Saturday is when all the really good stuff happens.

It's time to stop hiding your moobs, because this Saturday (August 11) is Shanghai LGBT's first and only drag party of the year! Those hard-working members at Shanghai LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) group have organized yet another gathering for all of Shanghai's outrageous citizens to enjoy. The venue for such a fabulous occasion is of course one of Shanghaiist's favorite spots, Shanghai Studio. Things might get a bit crazy in the underground lair sort...
