Take a look at some rare color photographs taken around Shanghai in the 1980s, including an old view of Nanjing East Road, where you can see the Peace Hotel and little else obstructing Shanghai's skyline. The photo on the Huangpu is taken across from a very bare-looking Lujiazui. There's also a shot of an old Huaihai Lu restaurant, a clothing market on Huating Lu, and a military parade through People's Square!

Though the clothes have been out for a while (and many of the celebrities themselves wore the dresses shown on the catwalk to the event), Marc Jacobs gave the fashion crowd an excuse to come out and take in an electric seventies feel collection.

Peace Hotel reopening on March 28
So not only will March 28 bring us the grand unveiling of the brand new Bund, it seems that the historic Peace Hotel has also chosen that day to welcome in the hordes. The north wing, which faces People's Square will retain its original appearance and the south wing will become a Swatch store. When it closed roughly three years ago, we mused on its history - you can read up on it here.

Weekend in Live Music (and an event YOU aren't invited to)
Alcohol companies (especially in Shanghai) are known for their lemming like approach to parties (maybe it is the incestuous nature of their cliques). The latest trend is in throwing expensive "invite only" parties like the Hennessy Artistry series and this weekend’s upcoming Smirnoff party featuring Hard-Fi and DJ Sasha (gag). Just like at the Hennessey party, we loser expats aren't overly welcome (at more than one of these parties we have been told that our extra invite shouldn't be given to a laowai). About the only way in is to be Chinese and register or be part of that trendster socialite clique who relies on being invited to these things to help keep their massive egos inflated. Don't think too much about it though, because this weekend there are plenty of other great shows where everyone is welcome ... and not a bottle of Smirnoff or Hennessy in sight.
Peace from the past
Ok, whatever people might say about the Bund – tacky, over-priced – most are still damn glad it's there rather than not. It is, after all, the most enduring reminder of Shanghai's decadent international past. Consequently, when the paradigm of this past, the Peace Hotel, recently closed for its US$65m makeover, a few questions were raised about the area's future.
