Just when the story of Spain's basketball team's slanty-eyed mischief was on the verge of exiting the news cycles, it gets a dose of revitalization from the blogosphere...with a little assist from their countrymen/women. From Gawker: But maybe Asia-mocking is actually a favorite pastime of all Spanish athletes—because their 2008 Federation Cup Tennis team, which beat China to move into the finals, was photographed in the same god damn pose! One of these tennis players......

We got this via email from Josh at medalcount.com: [Olympic medals] used to be mighty impressive, what you'd expect to earn after 4 years of hard work. The most recent medals, well, perhaps not. I present: Exhibit A: The Beijing air hockey puck Exhibit B: The Torino 2006 cracked DVD So I've put up picture galleries of every Olympic medal ever made. The winter ones, I dare say, tend to be more stylish. Of course,......

From The Guardian: Spain's Olympic basketball teams have risked upsetting their Chinese hosts by posing for a pre-Games advert making slit-eyed gestures. The advert for a courier company, which is an official sponsor of the Spanish Basketball Federation, occupied a full page in the sports daily Marca, the country's best-selling newspaper. The advert features two large photographs, one of the men's basketball team, below, and one of the women's team. Both squads pose in full......

TheHong Kong Lego User Group, HKLUG, has joined in the Olympic craze, by making their own models of Beijing Olympic venues: The Lego Sport City. According to HKLUG's blog: 300,000 bricks and 4,500 mini-figures have been used to create this lego landscape, which has taken about 100 hours to build. We are especially impressed with their tiny Go China! banner. (Look carefully at the wushu scene in the second picture) and the aquatic center. More......

China's Premier today urged the country's men's basketball team to "win honor for the motherland." But mostly we just wanted an excuse to run this photo of 65-year-old Wen's proper form — and, yes, we are talking about his decision to don dark socks with black dress shoes. Photo from huanqiu.com.......

In a critical post about a new search engine awkwardly-named Cuil, the folks at popular blog TechCrunch posted a screen grab of a Cuil search for "TechCrunch" and said: "And I have no idea who that person is next to the results for our 'About' section." Why it is none other than Shanghai's biggest R.E.M. fan, Sam Flemming, head honcho of Internet Word of Mouth research and consulting firm CIC. So, that answers the "who"......

In an article about official Olympic protest areas, the Wall Street Journal linked to some scanned pages from Olympic Security English, a training manual for Olympic police. We have reproduced those pages for your enjoyment. Poor Mr. Leer. He's an honest man. He can only make Indian pan cake. He's never seen a bomb. Yeah, right. Source: Enzaji Leer is caught red handed with the bomb!......

As the globe gazes towards China, it’s no surprise that some of the world’s best eyes have been attracted to the country to capture its image on film. Photographers old and new, local and foreign, have explored the nation’s landscapes, objects and people and are exhibiting their art in a place anyone can see it — the internet. For those who may never see the striking images in person, the visuals provide a partial description......

EastSouthWestNorth has uncovered Zhao Bandi (赵半狄), the man behind the Kung Fu Panda protest, as an unabashed panda lover and a fashion designer who has a line inspired by the national treasure. Check out the images from Zhao's fashion show below. Apparently he got China's internet celeb numero uno Furong Jiejie (芙蓉姐姐) to model for him and that one picture of her is priceless:......

The crowds were assembled, the flags were being waved, and the nationalism was fervent — Shanghai was ready for the torch relay. We'd got up nice and early, aiming for People's Square but, due to the volume of people, only making it as far as the corner of Tibet Road (yeah, we know). After waiting in the strong early morning sun for a couple of hours, the chants of "中国加油!“ ("Come on China!") got louder......

This set of powerful pictures were shot during a wedding photo shoot in Pengzhou, Sichuan when the earthquake struck. All survived the disaster but it looked like one old and very beautiful looking building was badly damaged by the tremors. ESWN draws our attention the heart-rending story of Chen Jian. Be very sure you watch all the way to the fourth video, or don't watch at all if you don't intend to cry today: Part 1: It's May 15 at the start of this video, and 26 year old Chen Jian has already been trapped under the rubble for 73 hours. While waiting for the lifting equipment to arrive, he chatted with the reporter Zhang......

Photo from erussel1984Via email from Shanghaiist reader Ned: I just wanted to let you know there was a fire at approximately 3.45pm in the Shanghai Centre. I am not sure what floor it started on but was in the Portman Hotel. I work in the office tower and we had no warning until we saw smoke outside the windows. I got to the lobby with my camera but the staff made me delete the photos......

We're somewhat late bringing this to you, but yes, over the weekend, anti-French protests took place over the weekend all over China outside Carrefour stores in Hefei, Qingdao, Wuhan, Shenzhen, Xuzhou, Zhengzhou, Luoyang, Jinan and Kunming. Although these were mainly anti-French anti-Carrefour protests, they were described by People's Daily as "protests against Tibetan independence". As usual, ESWN has been on top of things bringing us the latest news. This incident related last Thursday by ESWN......

By Benjamin Cohen Everyone's been talking about Moganshan lately, but it was only last weekend that we joined up with a few friends for a jaunt through its bamboo forests. This historic expat retreat, three hours from Shanghai, has enough cool mountain air and shimmering lakes to revive any weary urbanite. While Moganshan has plenty of hotels, we opted for a newly refurbished, carbon conscious cabin by Naked Retreats (and no, it was not that......

We can see it now. Fast-forward to 2010. An ancient Tibetan god called Gozer arrives atop an apartment building near Xintiandi in Shanghai, where it tells the neighborhood's restaurateurs that the next thing they think of will be the form Gozer will assume to destroy their world. Despite their efforts to clear their minds, Bob Boyce imagines Haibao, the irksome mascot of the 2010 World Expo. As he explains, Haibao "just popped in there" as......

Yet another fake of everyone's favourite racist toothpaste. Some background from Golden China Brands:Darlie, (黑人, hēi rén, or “black people”) is a toothpaste brand of the Hong Kong-based company Hawley&Hazel. Meanwhile it belongs to one of the US based multinationals. The original name when I started using it (about 25 years ago) was “Darkie”. Darky, or darkie, meanwhile is a racist term used primarily in America and the UK to refer to black people.......

Few animals get tabloid coverage of their sex lives splashed across international media like our furry friends the pandas. Their being few is what the fuss is about. And now their enclosures have become Big-Brother-animal-sex episodes where their lack of procreativity is monitored as scientists continue to ply panda eyes and orifices with strategic tactics. Chuang Chuang watches the filth-movie from metro.co.uk Panda sex labs are coming up with yet more odd behavior—not on the......

The gory posters promoting driving safely are not for the squeamish and, although found in public places around China, they are not for children. The drive safety campaigns have chosen an aggressive "show", not "tell"approach here, not dissimilar from the anti-smoking campaigns in some countries, where real images of cancerous lungs, rotted teeth and fetal babies are put on cigarette packs as a warning to smokers. But this drive safety ad campaign, featuring real images......
