Yes, we know the big piece of music news this week is that Linkin Park is coming to town. The super popular Nu-metal alt-rock-rap band is playing Shanghai Stadium on Saturday, and though (according to mypiao) all the cheapie tickets have sold out, you can probably still get a nose bleed seat for 1000RMB or 1600RMB. Since that's an embarrassing portion of our salary, we'll probably be skipping out on the actual concert and hoping Chester Bennington and friends bring the after party to one of our regular late night haunts.

So if last weekend was all about local bands for local people, this weekend is dominated by wai di ren. Whether it's "ghost punks" from some little hamlet in the US of A, northern monkeys from the capital or a band from the harmonious region of Xinjiang, there's a distinct outsider flavour to the next couple of days.

The Channel One complex on Changshou Lu is teaming up with Soma for a summer concert series. Despite our natural misgivings about rock bands playing in shopping malls, the line-up is a good one. Things start this weekend with Pinkberry and The Mushrooms on Saturday and Da Fresh and Momo on the Sunday. Spread out over four weekends, the concerts will see eight of the city's finest young bands in various combinations.

UPDATE: Pinkberry have been forced to withdraw from Saturday night's line up at Yuyintang (their bassist's wife is seriously ill, we wish her well).

              

Last week, one of our favourite local bands Pinkberry began filming a music video for 'Pinkberry Song' and asked us along to take part. It'll be a month or so before we can see the finished result, but it was an impressively professional start - we can't wait to see how it turns out.

There's not exactly tumbleweed blowing through Shanghai's live music venues this weekend, but it's fair to say that compared to the steady steam of bands we've had in recent months, this weekend seems a quiet one. Of course, Torturing Nurse's NOIShanghai show will ensure it is anything but, while SOMA are bringing together some of the city's brightest young bands tonight.

Before we get on with this weekend's live music preview (and there's plenty going on by the way), here's a quick round-up of some recent music news we thought we'd share with you.

                                

It was raunchy and raw, rockin' and raucous... and now it's over. The two night line up this weekend started out on Friday with Shanghai-based pop-rockers Pinkberry, DJ Sacco and an amazing set from Beijing's Demerit - easily one of the best bands on the alternative scene right now. And on Saturday, Maybe Mars outdid themselves, bringing us AV Okubo, Snapline, Ourself Beside Me and Carsick Cars. Special thanks to Split Works for bringing us two weeks of artistic mayhem. Please sir, may we have another?

French electro-rock group We are ENFANT TERRIBLE, who rocked LOgO last Friday, are doing a special encore show tonight at Yuyintang to end their China tour. Check them out for a repeat of Friday Fun... without the crowd. And don't forget to be there for the end of the JUE Festival this weekend, with two nights of killer acts at Dream Factory. Details:

Just one week in and 2009 has been largely dull, grey, and wet. Thankfully then, the good people at Split Works have put together a ten day long festival of art and music to warm our cockles - starting today. According to the organisers, Jue Festival is "an excuse to leave your hidey-hole and experience a punk show, an art installation, and everything in between", which sounds pretty good to us. The festival (which is also taking place in Beijing), will showcase some of Shanghai's best creative talent and is hosting a diverse set of artists and performers.
