Review: Twelfth Night play by SRT
Shanghai Repertory Theatre continues its theatrical year with Shakespeare's comedy of mistaken identity Twelfth Night. An entirely entertaining show that is sure to coax out a few laughs with some stand out performances from a talented cast, the show has been shifted from its Shakespearean era to the eve of World War II. This is reflected in the songs and the costumes but otherwise remains largely unreferenced. The plot unfolds with continued hilarity and the cast are perfectly suited to their roles. Count on SRT regular Laurie Padgett Fralick to steal the show even as one of the support characters. They've added a bit of musicality to the classic Shakespearean drama via her vocals, creating some of the most memorable highlights of the night. Tickets do however cost 200 kuai, with pre-sale tickets costing 180. If you have the money to spend then this play is definitely worth going to see and will make for an entertaining evening. This said, considering that the Jue Festival is now in full swing, there is plenty to see at a much better price. The play lasts for 2 and a half hours and starts at 8 o'clock. But be sure to get there early, because lord knows nothing breaks down the "fourth wall" more than a stooping, beer-toting man running across the stage.

Twelfth Night (or What You Will) premieres this Thursday at 8pm and will be followed by daily shows until April 3rd (except on March 28).
Shanghai Repertory Theater marks their first birthday with The Snow Queen
This winter, Shanghai Repertory Theater brings one of Hans Christian Anderson's most well-loved fairy tales to life with their newest dramatic piece, The Snow Queen. Adapted for the stage by Arran Hawkins and Natasha Portwood, The Snow Queen tells the story of two child best friends, Kay and Gerda. When Kay is stolen away by the Snow Queen, Gerda embarks on a long search encountering robbers, royalty, a sorceress, and more in order to bring her best friend back home.
Photos: Vagina Monologues at the Box
It was a fully packed house at the Box last night as the audience crowded in to see the famed play The Vagina Monologues. Organized as part of Shanghai Pride it is the second time we've seen the play in Shanghai. It was performed by a group of nine expat women who acted out Eve Ensler's monologues covering sex, rape, menstruation, labor, masturbation and even included a talented rendition of a triple orgasm.
The Laramie Project: a hate crime depicted on stage
One of the banned events during last week´s Pride festival, was the theatrical production "The Laramie Project". But don't worry about missing it, you´ll get a new chance to watch it this weekend! The organizers have found a new venue, and the play can finally be showed at River South Art Center, on Friday and Saturday.
The Vagina Monologues are coming to Shanghai
Eve Ensler's celebrated play—The Vagina Monologues —is coming to Shanghai. First produced in 1996 and first performed on off-Broadway's Westside Theater and London's West End, the play went on to become a global phenomenon. Each monologue is one woman's story, relating the vagina to sex, love, rape, menstruation, birth and other themes and issues in her life. Translated into at least 45 languages and staged in 120 countries to date, the play is performed as a benefit production around the world as a way to raise money for V-Day, an organization and movement that Ensler founded to help end violence against women.
Theater: Room service, anyone? Neil Simon's California Suites
We're holding our breath for this next production - it made the rounds on Broadway and on the big screen, and now it's coming to Shanghai at the East West Theater, which recently also hosted productions of Life X 3 and Waiting for Godot.
