Well, 2007 is pretty much over. This Shanghaiist has never really been a big New Year's person, maybe because we always end up the odd one out at midnight or the one that has to break up the drunken fights that erupt. But, in the spirit of the season we have decided to do that traditional (way over done) recap of the past year. 2007 was a big year for music in Shanghai and below are our picks for 2007...and of course this list is biased, memories are subjective to each person and the most memorable shows for me usually tend to be because of personal involvement at some level.

These are definitely the dog days of summer and as in summers past, live shows have dried up with the heat. Ironically enough Shanghaiist has chosen to skip town and head to even hotter Hong Kong where PK-14, Hedge Hog, New Pants and the Re-tros will be playing in the cramped but intimate Fringe Club on Sunday.

Pitchfork ran a post recently that touched on some Shanghai live music news, mostly the role they felt was played by the "slightly-more-repressive-than-ours" Chinese government. (Pitchfork is based in Chicago.) We've already offered you some reasons why Pretty Girls Make Graves canceled their April 28 gig at 4live. Pitchfork talked to their label, Matador, which said "following some miscommunications with promoters, Pretty Girls were unable to secure work visas in time for the shows." Hmmm. Wonder if the Shanghai-based promoter would want to comment on that? (The Pitchfork story also mention that Sonic Youth's Shanghai gig "went off without a hitch" — for the fans, yes ... but, again, the promoter may sing a different tune.)

The upcoming May holiday sees a Shanghai band heading to the US and a US band (not Pretty Girls Make Graves) coming to Shanghai.

Deyo, a local concert promoter, learned a US$5,000 lesson this past week: beware bands without managers. The Pretty Girls Make Graves gig — part of the post-punk rockers' farewell tour — slated for April 28 at 4 Live has been cancelled.

Seattle indie rock band Pretty Girls Make Graves are touring China before returning to the US for a few shows in May—their last, together, as a band. They are doing Beijing and Hong Kong before wrapping up their China tour in Shanghai, at 4Live on April 28, though the venue's event calendar doesn't extend beyond mid-March as of now.
