Shanghai taxi drivers are now increasingly pulling some magician stunts by swapping out your fully charged jiaotong ka (public transportation card) with an empty one using sleight-of-hand.
Cab-riding Shanghai residents, beware this transportation card scam!
Video: Worrying Chinese health statistics
This video, strange in that it's a well-produced English-language PSA-type clip directed specifically at the Chinese, covers just about every dismaying Chinese health statistic out there. Compiled from WHO, UN, and Chinese Ministry of Health data, the statistics show that apparently regardless of all the calesthenics, China is getting really fat and dying from all kinds of terrible diseases.
Watch out! Pickpockets targeting Wulumuqi and Anfu Lu
The next time you go by Wulumuqi Lu or Anfu Lu, please be on the look out for pickpockets, especially if you're a cyclist. Shanghaiist just witnessed two very close call pickpocketing attempts on this corner. This is what went down: Yours truly was enjoying a meal at Zest Express's Wulumuqi location preparing to write up another Cafetique review when we saw the manager of Zest's, Franck Krynen and his friend suddenly run out the door.
Don't wear skirts to the Shanghai Apple Store
Perhaps it wasn't immediately obvious from our pictures, but the stairwell leading down to Shanghai's first Apple Store is pretty translucent, i.e. not a good place to wear skirts. Unfortunately, women are wearing skirts to the Apple store and dudes are taking the opportunity to leer up at them. According to Shanghai Daily, one customer on opening day thought men were admiring the architecture of the staircase until she went to admire it too, and then looked up to find out what they were really looking at. She alerted staff to the situation and left, only to encounter two more men leering with "wicked smiles" on their faces. Heh.
PSA: Beware of taxi scammers
Shanghai officials have issued a warning against taxi drivers that may be using black market devices to scam passengers. The gidgets, which can be had for "several dozen yuan" either make the meter tick faster or increase the distance traveled.
