822 corrupt Shanghai officials punished in 2008


Shanghai Daily has published some interesting figures on city corruption. Apparently 822 government officials in Shanghai were punished last year, including 10 sub-ministry level officials and 62 division chiefs. Amongst them was Zhang Kepeng, former vice director of the city's Putuo District, and former VP of Shanghai Huayi Co., both for taking bribes.

It's four days to the opening of the Olympics and it looks like everyone's nerves are getting super-jittery. A mysterious black roller suitcase found at Tesco's outlet on Guangxin Lu in Putuo District caused a minor bomb scare yesterday evening around 8.30pm. All customers were evacuated and the police soon arrived, only to find that the suitcase contained absolutely nothing. [China Daily]

A month after the tragedy in Sichuan you’d be forgiven for feeling a little compassion fatigue. Whilst the focus of the recovery process has changed from the desperate speed of the first few days, there is still a lot of work to be done repairing damage both physical and emotional.
