China's net nanny bans individuals from registering domain names
In a country where freedoms are carefully chosen, China's internet has remained one of the few places where individuals can freely operate. Well, sort of: a good analogy would liken the internet here to the wild west, a place where disorder and unbridled individual liberty is always being chased by the law in one way or another. But China's net police seem to have taken a pretty drastic step in their ongoing efforts to tightly regulate the internet.
Families protest mine workers' deaths
As the death toll from a mine explosion this weekend in Heilongjiang rose to 104, relatives of miners killed have begun to protest outside of the mine entrance. Though China's Coal industry has gotten safer (only 1,175 people died in mines in the first half of this year, down nearly twenty percent from last year), the constant reoccurrence of deaths from poor safety conditions is nothing more than a tragic leitmotif.
Time's up for Chinese guide dogs
This Saturday, September the 20th, a temporary permission that allows guide dogs in public places will come to an end. The permission, that dated from June 20th was issued due to the Paralympics. After this date, guide dogs will be regarded as ordinary pets and not allowed on public transportation.
