So, Mr Big didn't make it after all to Shanghai's Midi Festival due to a visa boo-boo but nothing has stopped the show from going on over the weekend at Century Park. Since it began in 1997, the Midi Festival has grown to become China's largest rock music festival. Midi's Shanghai debut this year is, as Morgan Short of SmartShanghai notes, "historically significant", as it's the first multiple day rock festival ever to be held in Shanghai.

Bob Dylan's China show coverage tangled up in "The Times They Are A'Changin'" puns
In case you haven't seen the numerous advertisements for it, Bob Dylan is playing tonight in Shanghai! As you can imagine, it's kind of a huge deal - the counterculture icon was prevented from coming to this country last year and only made it here this time with a vetted set list. But we weren't the first stop on the China tour - Dylan made an appearance in Beijing first, which allowed Western media to give their thoughts. Apparently most of their thoughts are centered on how much the times are or aren't a changing.
Handsome Furs returning to China in August
One of the best live shows to hit Shanghai last year was Canadian indie band Handsome Furs' energy packed set at Yuyintang (we're not just saying that, it was top on our list of Best Music of 2009), so it's awesome to learn that they're coming to China yet again at the end of summer.
Britpop comes to China Part Two: Shanghaiist Interview Mani

Interview: Puressence brings Britpop to China
Two big acts are coming to Shanghai’s Mao Livehouse this Friday (April 16th). Hailing from the UK, Puressence and Mani (Gary Mounfield), of Stone Roses and Primal Scream fame, are visiting China for the first time on a two stop, two-gig tour of Shanghai and Beijing.
Here’s Shanghaiist’s interview with Puressence’s bass guitarist Kevin Matthews. An interview with Mani, who will be doing a dj-set, coming this Friday.
Music: P.K.14 on music downloads, mandopop and making rock
In a music industry complicated by media censorship, internet piracy, and a mainstream aversion to anything outside of mando-pop, PK14 is refreshingly honest. When asked how the band handles such political and commercial pressures, front man Yang Haisong replied “we just write what we feel like writing.” Yang's approach to music is not complicated by external pressures but rather by his own motivation to say what he feels needs to be said.

New Midi Festival location: Zhenjiang, two hours away from Shanghai (UPDATED)
China's largest rock music event looks like it's taking a break from Beijing for the first time since its 1997 inception and moving to Zhenjiang.
Windows Underground: Hipsters welcome
Anyone who's into rock knows that Windows Underground is the most reliable place to hear good live music at the weekend right now. The new Nanjing Xi Lu venue took the baton from Tembo as Windows' live messenger (arf!) a few months ago and has been packing them in from day one.
