Dating doesn't come cheap, even for local Shanghai students

Well gee, we guess this city is prohibitively expensive. Shanghai college students looking for romance can't catch a break - not from snooping Anti-PDA patrols and definitely not from their meager moneybags. According to Enovate, most college students get some allowance from their parents every month, but it's a pittance if you actually want to get romantic...

The famous Wang Hao now allowed to date

Oh joy of joys! China's number one Ping Pong champ, Wang Hao, can finally get a girlfriend. The 25-year-old men's singles world champion got in trouble five years ago when he started going out with fellow national team player, the then 17-year-old Fan Ying. He got a finger wag and a disapproving look. She was dismissed from the team. But now that it's 2009, he's totally allowed to date former national champion Peng Luyang, his manager said. "Wang is 26 and Lu is 23 (Chinese ages). It is normal to have a love affair at this age," the manager, Huang Biao told reporters. Maybe now that he has an outlet for his hormones, we'll see less emotional outbursts like his peeing at a KTV bar/"I am the famous Wang Hao!" incident from last October. Source: Straits Times

Romantic idea: Proposal billboards?

Here's a slightly more creative proposal than just that whole on-bended-knee-with-diamond-ring deal: A man in Jiangsu set up a huge billboard to propose to his girlfriend of two years, according to Netease. The proposal was a great success and the happy couple picked up their marriage certificate the next day.

Sichuan city spices up its sidewalk with a love theme

Didn't think the Chinese celebrated Valentine's Day? Chengdu apparently does, constructing this love-themed traffic crossing close to the city's Hejiang Pavilion, a popular dating venue for young couples. The local traffic bureau wanted to give the crossing a romantic atmosphere - and what's more romantic than gleefully stepping on hearts and the words "I love you"? Source: Ananova

Some 3,000 single men and women gathered last week at the Luwan Stadium for a mass matchmaking session, and by all appearances it looked like a very successful event. The men lined up in rows while the women went past them (do we detect some sexism there?) and if anyone liked each other, they could have a quick chat and exchange numbers. Some speed dating event that will make even the Moonies with all their lavish mass weddings eat their heart out.
