Housed on the second floor of Sasha's, the recently resurrected Prime 1921 promises customers a more international and certainly more meat-oriented approach to food than the former dining spot. Along with a new chef, Sacha Hernaus of the Grand Mercure Hongqiao, the venue also touts a fresh motto, "cuisine designed with wine in mind." We hiked over to the historic pink townhouse located on Dongping Lu to see if the fare is designed with quality in mind as well.

Longevitist: 10 Shanghai bars/restaurants that have lasted the decade
In a city like Shanghai, new openings are aplenty and sudden closings even more so. It seems that the evanescent nature of the city's restaurants and bars make it so that when something stays open for over two years, it ought to be counted as an old stand by. We are, of course, talking about expat establishments - there are tons of old Chinese restaurants that have stood the test of time, probably because the Shanghainese Shanghai population is a little less transient.
And yet, somehow some of these places have managed to survive the volatility of the city. They may have changed their appearance, they may have moved, but all and all they're still here, giving anybody who hasn't been here since 2000 something at least somewhat familiar to cling to.
We tip our hat off to them - for better or worse, they haven't quit for at least ten years. Listed in no particular order or importance, ten places that have been here since at least 1999.
2009 July 4th Rundown
You know where we’re going to be tomorrow, but if for some in explicable reason you don’t have a hankering for some Kelley Lee BBQ and rapturous Boxingcat brews, here are a few other options in town. We’re not including the AmCham bash because Sheshan isn’t quite “in town,” plus we think it’s just a tad criminal to spend 350 RMB (non-member price) for an American Independence Day bash in this wretched economy.
We're liking the new look, Sasha's
Recently, we stumbled upon an invite from fancy schmancy French Concession restaurant, Sasha’s, begging us take a (free!) sneak peek at their newly renovated dining room while sampling their upgraded menu. Without much thought, we blew off our happy hour dates and made reservations.
Photos: Shanghaiist's Election Hangover at Sasha's
Thanks to the couple hundred people who attended our Election Hangover get-together last night at Sasha's, co-hosted by American Craft Beer Partners. It was a great end to a wonderful day (unless, of course, you wanted the other guy to win).
Don't Forget: Election Hangover tonight at Sasha's!
Looks like many (most?) of us will have reason to celebrate tonight at Election Hangover. We'll be on the third floor of Sasha's (11 Dongping Lu, near Hengshan Lu, 东平路11号, 近衡山路) from 7 pm onwards. Drinks are half price including these fine beers from American Craft Beer Partners: Kona Longboard (from Obama's Hawaii), Brooklyn Lager, Brooklyn IPA, and Rogue American Amber Ale. (If you drink enough, perhaps Pennsylvania will begin to take its proper shape on this map.)
Nov. 5: Shanghaiist presents "Election Hangover" at Sasha's
It's almost over! By Wednesday evening — assuming there are no hanging chads — we should know who the next leader of the free world will be. And, either way, there will be reason to drink. Some will want to celebrate ... others will want to drown their sorrows ... and many will just be relieved the damn U.S. election is finally done and dusted. And all of them — be they Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, Socialists, Communists, Whigs, Tories or just thirsty — are welcome to attend Election Hangover on the 3rd floor at Sasha's (11 Dongping Lu, near Hengshan Lu, 东平路11号, 近衡山路), an extended happy hour presented by Shanghaiist.com and American Craft Beer Partners on Wednesday, Nov. 5 from 7 to 11 pm. Drinks, including ACB's fine American microbrews, are half price ... political discourse is free.
There Will Be Nuggets: Shanghaiist's Usain Bolt Appreciation Party this Thursday
A few updates on the Shanghaiist Happy Hour at Sasha's this Thursday:
Shanghaiist Happy Hour: Usain Bolt Appreciation Party, Sept. 4
Yeah yeah, we know. We're sick of the Olympics, too. But who can say no to the Boltman?
Shanghaiist Happy Hour at Sasha's: The Playlist
A couple updates about tomorrow night's gathering at Sasha's. First, we forgot to mention the wines that will be included in the half-price drink special. They are: Santa Rita 120 Sauvignon Blanc and Wolf Blass Eagle Hawk Shiraz/Cab/Merlot. Second, lots of people have asked1 for more information about the music that will be played at the Happy Hour, so we have included a list of artists featured on the playlist under "Music" below.
Shanghaiist Happy Hour this Thursday at Sasha's
You are all invited to join us Thursday night at Sasha's for the first Shanghaiist Happy Hour in a long, long time (nine months, to be exact). We think we have come up with a plan to avoid a similarly long gap between alcohol-related gatherings — the first Thursday of every month, we'll have a Shanghaiist Happy Hour featuring half-price drinks (and perhaps other special and great things) at Sasha's. And, as usual, these "happy hours" will not be limited to one hour (8 pm to midnight is what we're starting with).
Thank You to all guests, sponsors and partners of the Shanghaiist Earthquake Benefit: You've raised RMB228,336!
The turnout last night was phenomenal! The lines flowed out the door and onto the streets, the beer taps ran dry, no could hear the raffle winners’ names, and the BBQ queue was unbelievable… but, beautifully, no one seemed to care.
Shanghaiist's Earthquake Benefit at Sasha's: See you tonight!
It's perfect BBQ weather! As we're sure you've all heard, tonight's the night for the Shanghaiist Benefit for Sichuan’s Earthquake Victims at Sasha's. Word travels fast in Shanghai and some people have received the benefit announcement from five different sources!
Good cause, meat, beer, and over 20,000RMB worth of prizes tomorrow? Sign me up!
Shanghaiist has been nonstop busy for the past several days fielding emails and returning calls from companies interested in donating to the raffle at ‘The Great Shanghaiist Benefit for Earthquake Victims at Sasha's’. It’s a great reason to feel overworked.
