This weekend, support both your local amateur artists and Shanghai's favorite pet charity with a fun lunch at Café DuMonde 咖啡杜梦in Pudong. Second Chance Animal Aid (SCAA) will be holding the awards ceremony for their art contest there on Saturday, April 25.
It's crazy right? Not to say that Shanghai isn't in a charitable mood most of the time, but this is the first instance we've seen of an entire three day stretch dedicated to not one... not two... but four FIVE different charitable events. It's as if the charity heavens opened up and decided this weekend was the day to rain torrents of giving.

Here's a good new way to help out a local charity, and avoid paying the scandalous prices some businesses are now charging for carrier bags (we're looking at you Waga's...)

Everyone's having their own little calendar these days it seems. Second Chance Animal Aid recently came up with one, and this time, it's the boys from The Shanghai Rugby Football Club and Shanghai Hairy Crabs, and they've shed their clothes for a good cause!

Even as the majority of the domestic and international press crowned Inner Mongolia native and Shanghai resident Duo Zirong for her courage to stop the truck and "save" 800 cats from the food trade on July 7, dissenting voices have been raised with regards to the character of this women. And some have gone so far as to call her — as we have heard recently from those involved in various animal rescue organizations — more of a psychopath hoarder than a cat saviour.

There are a lot of tempting events coming up this weekend. But please don't invite us, we're saving up for Kenny G.
You know the Beijing city government is worried about its images leading up the Olympics, because it recently invited Chinese and foreign journalists to visit the dog impounding facilities it's set up for all the unlicensed dogs they've caught in their recent campaign against rabies, biting, and dog shit:
Of course you do. That's why you should head on down to Zapata's (yes, Zapata's) tonight for Second Chance Animal Aid's Gala Holiday Party. It starts at 6:30 pm and a 100 kuai entrance ticket gets you two drinks, food and a raffle ticket. There is a separate raffle for a cool Chang Jiang sidecar motorcycle (see video ... just like the the one Christopher St. Cavish rode on his charity ride through China). You can also inquire about how you can adopt one of the SCAA's wonderful dogs and cats (sorry, this guy and this guy are both taken ... by us). Here's what we got in our email this morning from the SCAA:
Then we have just the event for you: The 2006 International Bachelor Auction, this Sunday, September 10, at Pier One's Monsoon Bar. You can bid on a date with one (or more) of 20 eligible bachelors. All proceeds go to a great cause -- Shanghai Second Chance Animal Aid -- at a time when China's animals could sure use some aid. Admission is RMB 300 if you buy your tickets before Thursday, and RMB 350 after. That price includes a "walking dinner" (we assume that means a buffet) and two drinks.
Well, actually we don't like cats too much since we are allergic, but we love dogs and free drinks. If you do too, you might want to head over to Senses Wine Lounge (515 Jianguo Xi Lu, 龙聚苑酒吧建国西路515号) this week, because they have free drinks for anyone who makes a donation of one kuai (one friggin' kuai) or more to the Shanghai Second Chance Animal Aid organization. That's a deal even the Mouding County police can applaud.
Earlier this month, we briefly mentioned one local man's bizarre plan to host regular "dog matchmaking events" in Shanghai, aimed at pet owners who wanted to find the perfect breeding partner for their pet. The Shanghai Daily wrote the story in a playful, carefree manner -- and the people at the city's Second Chance Animal Aid non-profit organization were not amused. They have written a response letter to the newspaper, but it hasn't been published. So Shanghaiist, proud owner of a (neutered) pup adopted with the SCAA's help, is happy to publish the letter here:
A commenter at another Shanghai forum wondered why we didn't post much on Shanghaiist over the weekend. The easy answer is: Because it was the weekend. But this weekend was busier than most (for us, at least). Before the Happy Hour was the Roller Revival -- lots of fun ... great venue ... great music ... great costumes -- which we managed to escape with all bones in tact. Unfortunately, that is not something all of the party goers can say. There was at least one broken wrist, which shouldn't really come as a surprise since it was an open bar and most of the crowd had wheels on their feet. (Here are some photos.)
Great news out of Jarrett Wrisley's restaurant and bar gossip column this week in SH (especially if you live near Tongren Lu like Shanghaiist does):
Fireworks may be dangerous and all, but they sure do make for a wild, wild night. Here's hoping you all are recovering nicely and have a plan to enjoy today's unusually excellent weather. Some Chinese New Year links:
新年快乐! Xin Nian Kuai Le! Happy Chinese New Year! Happy Year of the Dog! Happy everything from all of us here at Shanghaiist. Eat well. Drink well. And don't forget to let go of the firecrackers.
