Shanghaiexpat.com down but not out

We've gotten one or two frantic emails from expats asking us why Shanghaiexpat.com is returning a dreaded 403. No worries, you guys, despite the amount of bitchin' in their forums, they didn't actually do anything to upset anyone. "Our server is meeting some problems at the moment," one of their people told me. "But we are working on it and will have it fixed very soon." So maybe take a break, get a drink, and log on tomorrow to continue talking about how all the burgers in Shanghai are crap. more ›

So, beat the winter doldrums, grab yourself a hot chocolate, and check out what Shanghai is cooking up this wintry weekend. more ›

Concierge's 10 best Japanese restaurants in Shanghai

Thanks to ShanghaiExpat user TrueNorth, we get a summary of free local Japanese rag Concierge's rankings of the top ten Japanese restaurants in Shanghai, supposedly voted on by 100 Japanese CEOs. "Top" in this case is apparently defined by where these voters would most likely treat their business guests. TrueNorth was kind enough to include links to each of the restaurants that includes addresses (albeit in Chinese) and phone numbers; just scroll down to see the post. UPDATE: D'oh, looks like Smartshanghai was on this one a month ago, complete with English info and short descriptiions. Our bad, Chris, thanks for doing the legwork. more ›

Give blood and help the earthquake victims

We know that many of you have been affected by the tragic aftermath of this week's devastating earthquake in Wenchuan and are looking for ways to help the victims, so here is your chance to immediately get involved. Those interested in donating blood have been instructed to make an appointment with Shanghai United Family Hospital by calling 5133-1968. more ›

Still seedy, but has Tongren Lu turned savage?

Still seedy, but has Tongren Lu turned savage?

Shanghaiist has been hearing a lot of rumours of late of dodgy, well, more dodgy behaviour along the Tongren Lu bar strip south of Nanjing Road. This morning, Shanghaiist was forwarded an email by our golf-enthralled editor via one of his trusted acquaintances. The email contained details regarding the assault of two expat males on Tongren Lu this week. more ›

Bubba's Texas BBQ: Mmmmm ... Mmmmm ... Good

Bubba's Texas BBQ: Mmmmm ... Mmmmm ... Good

OK, OK, we must confess we didn't actually taste the pulled pork at Bubba's Texas-Style Bar-B-Que & Saloon, which opened last month in Hongqiao -- because they didn't have any. This, as any connoisseur of this countrified cuisine will tell you, is not uncommon. Sometimes barbecue joints will not have everything on their menu available ... because it's not done cooking yet. A pig's butt needs to spend a decent amount of time in the smoker to get nice and tender. Deal with it. (Or, better yet, call ahead if you have a craving for something in particular. That way you can make sure you aren't making a wasted trip out to Shanghai suburbia.) more ›

Notes from the underground: Weekend music picks

Notes from the underground: Weekend music picks

Last weekend was quite a stunner, what with Japanese punk, Korean horror-movie music, and a new addition to the C's revival (better than "200 people turning up to DKD wearing mp3 players and dancing in their own heads all night"); but we live in the city where 酒不醉人人自醉 ("people, rather than alcohol, enebriate") and with a population of 13 million, the party doesn't stop so easily. Read on for this week's contributions to our city's tradition of bacchanalia. more ›

Xiangyang Market crackdown

Xiangyang Market crackdown

For all of you who are afraid of accidentally buying fake brand-name goods when all you really want is a pair of socks, this is your day. Having been to Xiangyang Market over the weekend, we heard from one of the “salesmen” that the yearly crackdown is going on as we speak and that it lasts until Wednesday. more ›
