The Dutch contingent's maiden show at this year's Shanghai Fashion Week on Sunday evening was by far the most outrageous yet (sending a model down the runway with a shirt pulled over his head - really?) Wigs, masks, elaborate headgear and wacky shoes by United Nude, the country that gave us famous fashion duo Viktor & Rolf pulled out all stops in showing Shanghai fashionistas what else they have to offer. more ›

Photos: Swedish designers' sweet Odeur

Swedish design duo Petter Hollström and Gorjan Lauseger debuted a solid sartorial selection over the weekend. For Spring-Summer 2011, out came draped hoods and a number of slouchy drop crotch pants on a glitter-covered catwalk. The clothes were mainly black and white save a few hints of orange (that pop of color in the zippers is a clever detail.) With that and the pairing of the clothes with dark, clunky heels, the edge was turned up to just the right amount. more ›

Photos: Simon Wang's French Revolution

At Simon Wang, models slowly sauntered to a live jazz singer's crooning, pausing midway to strike heavily angled poses. The concept, a jovial Wang said during a chat after the show came from the French Revolution. The looks went from dark, romantic, and repressed--seen through some of the bondage outfits--to bursts of color, court jester ruffle collars, polkadots, and shimmer. "Over-freedom" he termed it. We're not sure if we're completely on board with his whimsical fashion forecast however Wang said one trend he hopes will go away is pajamas as streetwear, "...[L]ike, hello, you're not in your living room." And with that, we can wholeheartedly agree. more ›

Photos: Uma Wang x Swatch Fashion Week kick off

Fashion week madness began Wednesday night at Fuxing Park. Leading the pack was designer Uma Wang, who collaborated with Swatch for her spring-summer collection. Wang sent a neutral palette down the runway. Hair-tousled models showed the first few looks in all white outfits and ended the show with head-to-toe black. Viewed from the front, many of the clothes looked deceptively simple, but as the models sailed past, back-sweeping elaborate draping would come into view. more ›

Around Shanghai: Flaming Pearl Towers, crowded Oriental Crowns, five-day Fashion Weeks

Around Shanghai: Flaming Pearl Towers, crowded Oriental Crowns, five-day Fashion Weeks

  • Yesterday morning, the Pearl Tower caught fire. But since it was at 2am and nobody got hurt, most people didn't care. Xinhua reports that "before the fire there was thunder, which could have triggered the fire." I think they forgot to add the lightning aspect of that in. [Xinhua]
  • Well, this is surprising: just having an Expo ticket doesn't necessarily guarantee you a visit to the Chinese Pavilion. Organizers feel that the Oriental Crown will be so popular that you may need to reserve your visit beforehand. Luckily, they'll be inside the Expo venue, so you can reserve, walk around to other pavilions and then come back - like a Fast Pass! [eChinacities]
  • Shanghai fashion week came and went pretty darn quick - it was more like Fashion FiveDay, really. If you want to see a gallery of hot fashion finds from this extremely short tribute to clothing, Urbanatomy's got one. [Urbanatomy]

Around Shanghai: Bund almost done, Fashion Week, and rail safety

  • Oooh, according to this photo, the Bund face-lift is finally nearing completion. Thank goodness - we're sick of all the construction dust around what once was the prettiest riverside scenic spot ever. [Shanghai Daily]
  • Six months after the previous fashion week, Shanghai's now hosting another for Spring and Summer collections. It'll go on from October 29th to November 7th October 21st to October 27th. [SIFC]
  • Shanghai Media Group, the conglomerate responsible for all those taxi and subway television ads, will be split into two parts - Shanghai Radio & TV (news, tech, public broadcast) and Shanghai Oriental Media Group (ads, production, distribution and market investment). You know, for all of you who care about this kind of stuff. [China Knowledge]
