It was but five (almost six!) years ago that Dan Washburn somehow roped the Gothamist network into setting up an outpost in Shanghai. He started Shanghaiist with a post poking fun at Jackie Chan's views on interracial relationships, setting the tone for hundreds of Jackie Chan jokes on this site since. But now he's leaving!
TONIGHT: Say goodbye to Shanghaiist's founder @ Sinan Mansions Boxing Cat
Photos: Bad Romance Valentine's Party @ Privé
Thanks for everyone who came out to our Enjoy Shanghai + Shanghaiist Valentine's Party! The lucky winners of the various raffles are below - Enjoy will be calling you in the next 48 hours to tell you how to get your prize:
What you can win at BAD ROMANCE: Valentine's party at Privé
While it's a little too late now to get the pre-sale price on the tickets to the Enjoy and Shanghaiist Bad Romance Valentine's Party, there are many MANY reasons why it's still worth its weight in Maos. Obviously, you're drinking for a steal, considering what beverages at one of the hottest clubs on The Bund usually cost... but we've sweetened the deal by giving you chances to win a bunch of prizes too.
LAST DAY left for our Bad Romance Valentines party pre-sale!
Still looking for something to do on the Saturday before Valentine's Day? We can guarantee that we're going to be the best party in town... and, for the amount of drinks you can get (unlimited!), the cheapest! The pre-sale tickets to our Bad Romance bash are only 120RMB, but we stop selling them on February 10th. So, if you haven't already, order them on this page. Enjoy will deliver the tickets to your door!
February 12: Shanghaiist and Enjoy team up for a Bad Romance
Before you guys inevitably put your heads down and power through the last thirty-some hours before Chinese New Year holidays start, here's something to look forward to when it ends: a Valentine's Day party, hosted by us and some friends at Enjoy Shanghai.
Halloween Haibot Apocalypse 2010: Robot March details!
Excited about the Shanghaiist Halloween party? We're planning on some great music, great costumes, great prizes for those costumes, and some super-cool semi-secret post-apocalyptic props - what more could you ask for? But before we even get to those aspects of the party, let's start with some details about the thing that's going to be kicking off our Haibot Apocalypse bash: The Robot March.
Reminder: Shanghaiist Scrabble Night tomorrow!
We mentioned it briefly in our Pencil This In, but we figured we'd give it a louder shout out too: tomorrow is our monthly Shanghaiist Scrabble Night, where all you wizened wordsmiths can pit your wits against each other on our especially oversized Shanghaiist Scrabble board!
July 4 Party @ The Boxing Cat Brewery: Eatin' Pie
Oh boy, was our pie eating contest something! Contestants had their hands tied behind their backs and were forced to shove their faces into pies as big as... well, their faces! The flavor of the day was banana creme and the winner (of 500RMB in Boxing Cat Brewery vouchers) was unlikely! Thanks to Justin Fischer of That's Shanghai and Geoff Ng of City Weekend for judging.
July 4 Party @ The Boxing Cat Brewery: Our costume contest winners
Thanks everybody for showing up at the Boxing Cat Brewery on Sunday! We know the weather was punishing, but you guys rocked it out! Here were the winners of the costume contest. While neither was quite Dukes of Hazzard-themed, we appreciated the extra steps they took to come in some kind of costume anyway. Both won an Enjoy Shanghai membership card each - have fun with all the discounts and freebies at Shanghai's most popular restaurants!
Happy U.S. Independence Day from us at Shanghaiist & Boxing Cat Brewery
Are you ready? We are and we're hoping the weather is too! Even if there are sprinkles though, we have three floors of the Boxing Cat to run rampant around! Anyhow, if you're looking for any info for the party, it's all here! Starts at 11pm, ends at 4pm and all the food, revelry and contests are just 225RMB!
Threesday: 3 Dukes of Hazzard-themed costumes we want to see on July 4
Sure, you could always wear a Western shirt and a cowboy hat to be one of the Duke brothers (and really, the only way we'd be able to tell the difference between Bo and Luke is their hair)...and heck knows being Daisy Duke is even easier, but it may take a little more finesse to win our Dukes of Hazzard costume contest at our upcoming Fourth of July party at Boxing Cat Brewery.
Reminder: Sign up for the contests at our Boxing Cat Brewery July 4 Party
There's only a week left until July 4, so here's a friendly reminder to sign up for all the activities you'd like to take part in (besides the regular mix of drinking and eating)! In case you missed it during the past week, here are the sign up sheets.
Sign up for the July 4 pie eating contest, you gluttons!
Don't think you have the liver or the lack of gag reflex needed to participate in our charity chugging competition? No worries, there's still some way to get your jollies in competing: why not try your hand at scarfing delicious Boxing Cat Brewery pies instead? Here's what you need to do to take part:
Sign up for the July 4 "Boat Race" Charity Beer Chugging Competition!
We mentioned briefly the rules for our micro-brew beer chugging competition (for charity!) in our post about the upcoming July 4 party before, but just so there's no confusion, here's exactly what you need to do to take part:
Shanghaiist + Boxing Cat Brewery's July 4 Party: Dukes of Hazzard, contests and prizes galore!
Yeeeeehaw! If there was anything we're good for at Shanghaiist, it's makin' our way the only way we know how - and this July 4 we'll be makin' our way to the Boxing Cat Brewery for a good ol' Independence Day shindig. Last year's July 4 party was a rousing success, if we may say so ourselves, and this year's promises to be much of the same. Like last time, we'll have LIVE MUSIC playing and a BOAT RACE (aka chugging rally) for charity!

Photos: July 4th Celebration @ Boxing Cat Brewery
The weather held up, Carlton J. Smith made everyone shake their booties, and lots walked away with fabulous prizes (the Crocs had their own cheerleading team). All in all, it was an incredibly successful Fourth of July celebration!
Preview Photos: Eyes wide shut at the July 4 Party
Spurred on by the light buzz from beer we had chugged for charity, we pounced upon some unsuspecting flag-waving partygoers during the July 4 Shanghaiist + Boxing Cat Brewery Party last weekend.
Last Reminder: Shanghaiist + Boxing Cat Brewery July 4 Party
Music: The soulful sounds of Carlton J. Smith and some American tunes besides.

So it seems that Shanghaiist is not the only weblogger in Shanghai.
Shanghaiist T-shirts: This season's Juicy Couture
Not sure if you heard or not, but we're having a party on Friday. And while people seem genuinely excited about the great live music, the cool prizes (see below) and the chance to meet Shamus, we all know that what will really pack 'em in the British Bulldog Pub are the Shanghaiist.com T-shirts! (Play along, folks.) Yep, Friday will be your first opportunity to purchase these custom-made, 100-percent-cotton wonders that have local fashionistas foaming at their pouty little mouths. You know why, right? They are ringer Ts! Shanghaiist T-shirts, which come in normal Western sizes, will sell for 60 RMB on Friday. That's less than a beer in some bars in Shanghai. Some lucky party-goers will win a shirt in our lucky draw. Here are some of the other prizes up for grabs:
