China's High School Musical actually College Freshman Musical

China's High School Musical actually College Freshman Musical

Thanks in part to the immense popularity High School Musical enjoyed whilst it was on the stage in Shanghai, Disney is now working with Shanghai Media Group and Huayi Bro.s on a Chinese-version of the made-for-TV movie - and it's based in our city! But those looking for a direct translation of the show will be pretty disappointed - it's being vastly adjusted to fit Chinese culture and sensibilities: more ›

Around Shanghai: Bund almost done, Fashion Week, and rail safety

 • Oooh, according to this photo, the Bund face-lift is finally nearing completion. Thank goodness - we're sick of all the construction dust around what once was the prettiest riverside scenic spot ever. [Shanghai Daily]
 • Six months after the previous fashion week, Shanghai's now hosting another for Spring and Summer collections. It'll go on from October 29th to November 7th October 21st to October 27th. [SIFC]

Shanghai: A utopia of courtesy?

This latest courtesy campaign video starring top hosts from media conglomerate SMG reminds us of the courtesy campaigns that we grew up with in Singapore. Don't get us wrong, we do like the idea of a kinder, gentler Shanghai, but there is something about the unrealistic and surreal touch of the whole video that actually made it feel a bit, erm, creepy. A series of shorter clips might have done the trick, whereas a 6 minute vid of people all across the city being kind to each other is, quite simply, an overkill. What do you guys think? Soon... more choices in English-language propaganda

Soon... more choices in English-language propaganda

Rumour has it that Shanghai Media Group, the city's largest TV conglomerate which operates 20 television and radio channels, has plans to start a new 24-hour English language news channel. Rejoice all ye who don't have (or can't afford) satellite at home (that includes us)! Well apparently this has been in the works for a year now, and while SMG hasn't jumped pass the final regulatory hurdle, it has already started hiring "hiring English-speaking presenters, editors and reporters, including foreigners, for the new service" (now just where does one send in his CV?). more ›

Ronaldinho lights the way for the footballing world

Ronaldinho lights the way for the footballing world

The self-proclaimed "special one", Chelsea Manager Jose Mourinho (or Jose Moaninho as he's known to British football fans) was not feeling quite so special last night as Barcelona over-powered his dull Chelsea side in every department. Despite running away with the Premier League this year and last year, Chelsea have faultered in the Champions League, even with the benefit of not-so-squeeky-clean Russian Billionaire Roman Abramovich pouring money into the team (440 million pounds -- $765.3 million -- in total since he bought the club in 2003, half of that going to buy new players). more ›
