The free admission that began this week was such a great success at the Shanghai Museum that officials have now limited the maximum number of visitors to 5,000 at any time. The other three museums included in the trial also reported a spike in visitor numbers.Xunlei, the Chinese P2P service that is currently being sued by the Hollywood-based Motion Picture Association for US$1 million has said that the Shanghai court was not the appropriate place......

Police have arrested four men and one woman for trafficking in methamphetamine, or "ice" around the Fengxian District. While the nation's very first anti-drug radio programme aired here on Sunday, an increasing number of celebrities are getting caught for drug abuse. Zhang Yuan, one of China's most popular directors, was arrested two months ago on drug charges. And recently, singer Xie Dong, himself an anti-drug volunteer, was detained after testing positive for meth along with......

Shanghai doctors are urging the government to install defibrillators in public venues so as to provide people with emergency treatment if they suffer sudden cardiac arrest. The installation of defibrillators in busy high-traffic public areas such as airports has already been practiced in some western countries but for now, the only place in China where public defibrillators have been installed is Beijing.Authorities in Hongkou district are asking two Shiji Hualian supermarkets to have their signages......

Ex-convict/drunk driver/pornstar Heiress/socialite/singer/designer Paris Hilton — fresh from her modelling gig with Fila Sportswear in Seoul — is now in Shanghai for the first time to attend Friday's 2007 MTV Awards and Style Gala at the Shanghai Grand Stage. Apparently, she didn't think the Hilton hotel would make her feel at home here, so she decided to check into the Grand Hyatt at the Jinmao instead. Shanghai Daily, believe it or not, has the scoop:......

The next JazzArt concert is upon us once again! And this time, featured will be the JQ Whitcomb sextet, playing original compositions and fun music from their regular Thursday repertoire as well. It is the first of a whole slew of great concerts and jazz performances happening this month, many of which haven't made it into the magazine listings. So expect to see more news right here over the coming days reporting on them. JazzArt,......

The China premiere of The Painted Veil last night at Shanghai Museum* had a red carpet and champagne (and prom decorations), but it didn't have Naomi Watts or Ed Norton, the film's two stars. Curiously, Norton was in Beijing on Friday for a Painted Veil press conference — why not have the main press conference and the premiere in the same city? Some of the Chinese stars of the film were in attendance, including familiar......

Back in February, Wired Magazine ran a story on the center of the USA according to Google Maps. The -ist network of sites, being geographically organized, was quick to pick up on this meme, giving us the center of New York and of Washington D.C.. Inspired by the pirate within us, Shanghaiist rose to the challenge of finding the X that marks the spot and discovered that this is not such a simple calculation for......

Good ol' Micah, who hasn't posted on Shanghaiist for quite some time, is busy working on a translation of the above titled essay. Here's how it begins: 即使你很高傲,即使你很懒散,即使你很羞涩,即使你很偏激,只要你来到上海,而又不想自我封闭离群索居,总会沾染上几丝上海独有的小资情调。假如你喜欢上海,而又不是愤青,熟读以下文字,可以帮你提前热身,让你尽早溶入上海的风花雪夜中。 No matter whether you are a dandy or a vagrant, whether a church mouse or always the center of attention, when you come to Shanghai, even if you lock yourself in solitary confinement, you can't help but be infected by the city's unique bourgeois spirit. So if......

The Shanghai city government has decided to adopt the emergency weather code used in the rest of the country -- blue, yellow, orange and red, in order of increasing severity. The typhoons that swept through Shanghai this summer caused an estimated 1.7 billion yuan in damages and lead to 216,000 and 164,000 people evacuated for Typhoons Matsa and Kanu, respectively, also a Shanghai record (in Chinese).Fifteen day old fetuses are considered human beings both legally......

Shanghaiist headed out with high hopes Saturday morning, aiming as we were for a dose of high culture at the Louis XVI exhibit at the Shanghai Museum. The exhibit, which opened on September 1, comes on the tail end of the China-France cultural year, which concluded in July. There we found the usual things -- marble busts, paintings with Louis XVI and the Holy Trinity, globes and gold plated masks. These precious objects were glimpsed......

Most people climb the Great Wall. Some run up it. A few strange souls ride their unicycles on it. And 1000 saxophonists are planning to gather on it to play their instruments in unison (if you've scheduled an outing to Badaling that day, we strongly suggest a stroll around the Summer Palace instead). Then there's Danny Way. He's going to jump over the Great Wall on his skateboard. Tomorrow. 5pm. Now, we at Shanghaiist have......
