Photos: Usher at Shanghai's Mercedes Benz Arena
After nearly a month of promotions, contests, and other miscellaneous hullabaloo, Usher performed for the first time in Shanghai at the Mercedes Benz Arena at Expo. Apparently it was worth the wait - the R&B hit maker played all his most recent singles and invited a fan up to be serenaded to. Shanghaiist reader Niels Fontein was near the front row, snapping pictures of the event - it turned out to be a tough task. "Security was shining lasers into our eyes and trying to snatch our cameras away every time we tried so snap a shot," he said.

Interview: People Under the Stairs
Underground hip hop act People Under the Stairs have flown all the way from Los Angeles to play one night at The Shelter. Consisting of Thes One and Double K, the group has been putting on amazing live shows since the late 1990s. Just before their Shelter debut, PUTS gave Shanghaiist the low down on hip hop, being in China, and buying fake DVDs.
Photos: Jose Gonzalez at Children's Art Theater
Shanghaiist was lucky enough to hang out with Jose Gonzalez for his first night performing in Shanghai. After a delicious meat-free meal at Jujube Tree (aka Vegetarian Lifestyle) — Jose is a vegetarian — we went off to be thrilled by his performance at the Children's Art Theater on Huashan Lu. Jose played the greatest hits from his last two albums, including "How Low" from In Our Nature and his cover of The Knife's "Heartbeats."
Photos: JUE Festival Last Weekend
It was raunchy and raw, rockin' and raucous... and now it's over. The two night line up this weekend started out on Friday with Shanghai-based pop-rockers Pinkberry, DJ Sacco and an amazing set from Beijing's Demerit - easily one of the best bands on the alternative scene right now. And on Saturday, Maybe Mars outdid themselves, bringing us AV Okubo, Snapline, Ourself Beside Me and Carsick Cars. Special thanks to Split Works for bringing us two weeks of artistic mayhem. Please sir, may we have another?
Corrupt Absolute, Jens Lekman and Cold Fairyland
Usually weekdays in Shanghai are fairly dead when it comes to gigs, but this week there is a slew of shows worth checking out. Jens Lekman will be playing two, much anticipated shows at JZ Club on Wednesday and at Glamour Bar on Thursday. This gives you two chances to check out why so many people are excited about the appearance of this Swedish indie-pop crooner.
