What: Ladies Night at glo London Lounge Bar
Ladies Night Sip or Skip: glo London's lady loving lounge
Man, you don't stand a chance: Chinatown, Shanghai's burlesque club, closes
It's been on troubled ground for a long time now, so this shouldn't come as too much of a surprise... but it's still a shame to say goodbye to Chinatown, Shanghai's first (and, we think, only) modern burlesque club.
New LOgO location is next to Tianzifang
Well color me surprised: LOgO has found itself a new spot at 107 Sinan Lu near Taikang Lu, just a block away from the sprawling cafe-dom of Tianzifang. According to the guys at Lune, they'll be taking over the old Sound Blue space and turning it into the divey joint we all knew and loved. Still - we're hesitant to get too attached: Luwan district is not exactly known for its love of loud noises and big crowds in the middle of the night.
LOgO to shut down in ten days?!
We thought that with the end of Expo coming, things would get easier for bars around the city. Not so it seems! Not only is Shanghai Studio having troubles staying open - apparently LOgO is too. SmartShanghai reports that the bar has been given an ultimatum to close down in ten days. Says the owner: "Too many complaints = Can't get the bar license. Sad." Indeed. It was one of my favorite late night venues - playing fooseball at four in the morning anywhere else just won't feel the same.
Shanghai Studio too noisy for their neighborhood?
Uh oh! Is Shanghai Studio in trouble? According to Shanghai Daily, the "rowdy bar... has been warned it will be shut down if its customers continue to disturb residents. Apparently, not only is it noisy, "a surveillance camera captured two men having sex outdoors." Yeesh, and we thought our Halloween party there was crazy. The report said they're being given one more chance to keep things quiet before they get kicked out - which usually means, it's already been decided that they WILL be kicked out, but the local landlord is waiting for an excuse to look benevolent. Shanghai Studio has yet to comment.
Watch: Shanghai in Motion Part IV
The Rhone Alps Pavilion releases yet another of their amazing videos documenting the sights and sounds of Shanghai. This edition, Part IV, is focused on Nightlife. I spotted Constellation, Dada, Mao Livehouse, LOgO, Yuyintang and one of those expensive bars on the Bund (they all look the same to me) - plus, for the first time in any of these vids, a bunch of people I actually know.
Sin closed indefinitely, but Shelter open on weekdays!
Two tidbits of nightlife news from SmartShanghai: Sin Lounge, which City Weekend readers named to be one of their favorite places (go figure!), is in a dispute with their landlord and will be closed indefinitely. On the other hand, Shelter had their first week back from the weekday ban. For the last month or so, they've only been allowed to open up on the weekends - now, they get to usher people in on Wednesday and Thursdays as well. So go to Swap Meet next week and celebrate.
Have we been had? Shelter's staying open!
So, here we go again with a question that we didn't think would have more plot twists than Lost: Is Shanghai nightlife going to suck during the Expo? Current answer: Maybe. Maybe not.
Yes, nightlife is going to suck during the Shanghai Expo
Yep, our worst fears have come true. Shanghai's nightlife is looking set to suck during the Expo period as officials get strict on clubs and bars across the city.
Pavillon Costes to close, reincarnate as Buddha Bar
Pavillon Costes, the uber French uber classy joint that recently hosted New York electro-act Holy Ghost! has... become something of a ghost itself. Says SmartShanghai, the place will close down and become a new Buddha Bar. Apparently, its management (who will remain the same) believes an Asia-centric theme will have better prospects than whatever it was Pavillon was going for.
Bars: Boarding The Rhumerie Bounty
It may be really dorky of us, but we love ourselves some pirates. No, really - we were dressing up in frocks and corsets and eye patches and talking about 1800s naval warfare loooong before Johnny Depp came around and made it cool. So when we found out that a pirate-themed rum bar had opened up literally around the corner from our apartment, we nearly gagged from our glee.
