Gay groups urge boycott of movies by Lü Liping and Sun Haiying

Gay groups urge boycott of movies by Lü Liping and Sun Haiying

Gay groups have called for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community in China to boycott movies by award-winning actress Lü Liping (吕丽萍) and her husband, director Sun Haiying (孙海英), after the former kicked up a maelstrom of debate on Sina Weibo for expressing support for the homophobic sentiments of a Chinese pastor in Rochester, New York decrying the legalisation of same-sex marriage by the New York State Senate. more ›

Where we'll be today: ShanghaiPRIDE Family Day

Where we'll be today: ShanghaiPRIDE Family Day

After three weeks of panel discussions, film screenings, art shows, sports events and parties, the curtains finally come down on ShanghaiPRIDE 2010. Apart from the odd cancellation of an event forced by the men in uniform, all other events associated with the festival have been allowed to be conducted safely and without harassment. That's reason to celebrate for ShanghaiPRIDE's team of about 100 organisers and volunteers (including yours truly), and that's what they'll be doing today at two events. more ›

ShanghaiPRIDE Halloween pub crawl cancelled

Oh shame! The first cancellation has happened to this year's ShanghaiPRIDE event, and unfortunately for the happy 'weeners, it's the Halloween pub crawl. Say the organizers, "wo of the bars on the pub crawl, namely the first and last stops, have received an order by the local district police to shut for the evening." All other events are still going on as planned. Well, in case you wanted something else to do that night, LGBT and friends, we know of at least one other place you could go. more ›

This Week in Shanghaiist

This Week in Shanghaiist

  • Remember all those kids who were supposedly growing breasts after drinking milk?! Well it turns out that it was all an elaborate hoax with the rumours started by a rival milk company.
  • Whilst we all may have been lulled in to thinking that all was quiet on the Sino-Japanese front after the Diaoyu Island incident, more nationalistic protests took place that the government plainly ignored.
  • Here’s an idea to try to soothe the relationship between Beijing and Tokyo; why don’t we make use of 120 kilos of rice? It seems where diplomacy has failed with Norway following the Nobel prize fall out, 8734 pieces of sushi has done the trick!

Photos: Vagina Monologues at the Box

It was a fully packed house at the Box last night as the audience crowded in to see the famed play The Vagina Monologues. Organized as part of Shanghai Pride it is the second time we've seen the play in Shanghai. It was performed by a group of nine expat women who acted out Eve Ensler's monologues covering sex, rape, menstruation, labor, masturbation and even included a talented rendition of a triple orgasm. more ›

LGBT Youth tell us about their underground Shanghai society!

LGBT Youth tell us about their underground Shanghai society!

This weekend saw the opening of Shanghai’s very own Pride Festival; a fantastic evening by all accounts. The first of its kind in mainland China, and now in its second year, the festival aims to promote Diversity, Unity and Harmony. Promoting more acceptance of the LGBT community could not be more relevant given the recent spate of teen suicides that have plighted the US after several teens committed suicide after suffering anti-gay bullying (In memory of those teens, today is ‘Wear Something Purple’ day!). more ›

Shanghai Pride coming later this year

Aw nards. Following the successful run of Shanghai's first ever gay pride week last year, which we documented quite proudly, everybody was looking forward to another summer of LGBT fun/activism. Alas, it is not to be. According to City Weekend's LGBeat, Shanghai Pride will not happen until later this year. Maybe. Update: Someone on the Shanghai Pride inside has now told us that the event will be in September/October... which is probably less unbearably humid weather to host it in anyway. So phew - late date does not mean death knell. more ›

Watch: Dylan Chen behind the scenes of Shanghai Pride

Watch: Dylan Chen behind the scenes of Shanghai Pride

Earlier this year, Aritz Parra of the new video news network VJ Movement took his camera and followed Dylan Chen, one of the organisers of Shanghai Pride, mainland China's very first gay pride season. He followed the young man over the course of two months, chronicling the ups and downs Dylan and his team experienced in putting together the event. The result is this beautifully and sensitively edited video clip you see below. Check out the money shot of the plainclothes policeman videotaping one of the Shanghai Pride events. more ›

Authorities intervene with Shanghai Pride

Authorities intervene with Shanghai Pride

Up until yesterday, it'd been smooth sailing for Shanghai's first Pride week. But as of Wednesday afternoon, the festival, a celebration of gay pride and social tolerance, ran into some problems with the authorities. Officials from a Shanghai commercial bureau visited and warned the owners of two venues that they would face "severe consequences" if they failed to cancel the events that were to be held there. more ›
