The ongoing Two Sessions in Beijing -- the National People's Congress (ie., the legislature) and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (the top politcal advisory body) -- is the best time each year to observe Chinese democracy in action. You'll see happy minorities in all their ethnic finery, delegates decked out head to toe with the latest luxury items this season, and beautiful female journalists -- what more could anyone ask for?
Chinese democracy 'in-action': Sleeping delegates at the Two Sessions
Photos: (More) Chinese people sleeping!
As we've said before, one of the things we admire most about the Chinese is their ability to sleep anywhere and everywhere, at pretty much any time. Apparently we're not the only ones - we stumbled across this gallery in the Netease forums and felt compelled to share a few selections with the rest of you. Enjoy!
Watch: Chinese people sleeping
We're a big fan of how Chinese people are completely able to sleep anywhere,so this gallery set to song really strikes our fancy. From one of our favorite Flickr contributors dbmboise
Photos: Expo sleepers rendered artistically
Last week we were alerted to the phenomena of nappers at the Expo and posted some of the ones that had been passed around the internet. Now photog and Shanghaiist reader Etienne Giust has sent us his own takes. With the higher resolution and the burned edges, it's almost like we're dreaming about Shanghai dreamers.
Sleeping an extra hour in hot weather good for your health
Traditional Chinese Medicine experts are suggesting that people sleep one extra hour each day during hot weather periods, according to Shanghai Daily. Generally, sleeping between midnight and 4am is best, since the organs need that time to rest, and an one hour nap at noon can decrease the incidence of cardiovascular diseases in seniors. Personally, we'd love to take that allotted one hour nap time (especially considering the temperatures these days)... unfortunately, noon's about the time that the endless construction around the city - and our building - starts. Do TCM practitioners have any tips for sleeping through drilling noises so loud they shake our apartments?
Chinese people sleeping at wangbas
Ah, this takes us back to when we were just wee High School kids running amok in Shanghai. After a night of partying, one of our crew realized he had nowhere to go back to, since the person whose house he was supposed to be “sleeping over” at had left hours ago. The rest of us being female and 17 (with somewhat conservative parents), couldn't offer him our couches.
