Well, what to make of this. First it was rice cookers being used to steam cheeseburgers into something resembling a cheese-caked cow pie on a soggy bun, and then it was the little-known offshoot, the Rice Cooker Hamburger Potato Soup. And now, Weibo brings us Rice Cooker Oreo Pudding, the latest rice cooker-based experimental munchies entry that looks to intrigue stoners, 8-year-old Emerils and pregnant women in equal measure.
Seen on Weibo: Oreo pudding made in a rice cooker!
Grab a Bite: Cha's "bo lo baau" (pineapple bun)
Why you should grab a bite: In terms of sweet pastries, this is Hong Kong's ambassador to the world. Cha's serves authentic Hong Kong food well and for only 6RMB, it's also affordable Cantonese cuisine--not exactly a commonly seen thing here in Shanghai.
Photos: No rain on Krispy Kreme's parade
We checked out the Krispy Kreme grand opening today on Wujiang Lu, intending to take a few pictures and bite into a few donuts. No dice on the latter, as we were met on this rainy day with an annoyingly long queue of people waiting to get into the store for some donut giveaways. Judging from the huge LCD screen and the confetti and the Jason Mraz blaring from the speakers, we figured we missed out on a pretty ridiculous party. But hey, Jason Mraz and sweet donuts sure seemed to be a winning combination for the smiling Shanghai ayi's we saw leaving the store. Or it may just be free food that does the trick.
Krispy Kreme to open December 15
Remember that Krispy Kreme that was spotted down on Wujiang Road? Well, it looks like it's going to open on schedule: December 15th is the official date. As we've been waiting for quite some time to gorge ourselves on some delicious artery-clogging doughnuts, we're pretty excited about it. Remember, the first 200 people at the store get a "special surprise:" we're so curious about it that we might just line up early.
A new Twist for Shanghai's dessert scene
Twist is a tiny little depot that specializes in cold Taiwanese desserts. They've got smoothies and juices, but what you really need to go to Twist for is the shaved ice. Though we're sure there are similar offerings sprinkled around the Taiwanese enclaves Hongqiao/Gubei, we're positive that in Shanghai proper, Twist has the freshest and most authentic ingredients meant to sit atop a mound of shaved ice.
