Shanghai's largest bar league is warming up the pitch

As is done every Fall, the Shanghai Softball League is getting ready for their second season of the year. This year, August 23 marks the beginning of an eleven-week race for the Cakey Cup, the league's championship trophy. It's currently sitting at the Boxing Cat Brewery.

Play ball! On Tuesday the China Baseball League released the official schedule for this year's games. The Shanghai Eagles, cheered on by their newly named mascot Tianyi the Eagle will play 9 home games this year, all in the first pre-Olympic half of the season. The home opener is April 18 against the Guangdong Leopards at Pudong's Kangbei Baseball and Softball Stadium. With the opening of the new metro lines making the trip out to the stadium is easier than ever: simply take Line 6 to the West Gaoke Rd station and walk west one block to the sports complex that hosts the Eagles' games. Bring some snacks, your glove and be ready to cheer the home team!

Expanding on earlier reports, the Associated Press reported on Friday that Major League Baseball plans to open an office in China "within a month" and they'd like to have the regular season opener played in Beijing by 2008. Baseball's bobble heads are gonzo about the sport's potential "in a nation that has a population of more than 1.3 billion." The subhead for the first story linked to above says the "search for baseball's Yao Ming is on." (We've heard that before.) Back in 2004, an observer of Chinese baseball told us China was 10 to 15 years behind most other countries when it came to baseball. And this paragraph from the AP story would make it seem like that isn't going to change anytime soon:

Shanghaiist probably knows a little more about China than the Chicago Sun-Times. Giving them the benefit of the doubt on that one. The city does to have a music scene. Don't even front like they don't. They also have Dorito bananas. What they don't have is any more tolerance for jaywalkers.

China Daily has three photos from Michael Bolton's performance at the Shanghai Grand Stage last night -- and we can almost hear his vocal cords shredding just looking at them. Here is the caption that ran with the photos:

What is the deal with local magazines making drastic changes and leaving their readers in the dark? First it was 8 Days and its unannounced switch to SH Weekly. And now That's Shanghai -- in an unrelated move, we assume -- has given itself a facelift. The September issue has a new look and the cover is emblazoned with gold lettering proclaiming itself a "Collector's Edition." But inside the magazine Shanghaiist finds nary a word explaining to readers the thinking behind the redesign, no explanation about what makes this edition so collectible. And don't bother looking for insight on the magazine's website -- on Sept. 4, they still had an image of August's issue under the words "This Month's Magazine." It's a shame, really, because the new look is a big step in the right direction. While the content is mostly still the same, the magazine looks cleaner and classier now, and they've livened things up a bit with some well-placed color.
