We're only too glad they didn't decide to do this to home users instead: "For the first time this summer, Shanghai's power company cut supply to 1,435 industrial users in suburban Qingpu and Songjiang districts yesterday due to a serious shortfall in the areas, the Oriental Morning Post reported today... As the city tries to juggle a tight power supply with spikes in demand, industrial users will be required to close when a potential power shortage occurs, as households will get priority, according to the local power company. We hope this will ease the squeeze in downtown Shanghai: "More than 4.4 million residents will be encouraged to move to the suburbs in 2020 after the city government pledged to build seven new towns with full public service facilities and more job opportunities, the city's urban planner revealed yesterday." In one of the more bizarre deaths we've heard of, three people were found dead in an oil container on a waste-oil collection ship in Shanghai's Songjiang District. All three bodies - two men and one woman - belonged to the same family and an initial investigation has ruled out murder. Instead, a stranger hypothesis has emerged: one victim could have accidentally fallen into the container while collecting oil. Uh oh, it looks like us pedestrians aren't the only ones getting stolen from recently, thanks to the current dastardly economic situation. City police have now issued a warning reminding companies that keeping large amounts of cash on their premises may not be a good idea. Shanghai has seen a 35% rise in thefts of local areas since February, compared to the same period last year. The most robbed districts: Qingpu, Pudong, Fengxian, Songjiang and Jiading. The exhibit is scheduled to travel to over 100 cities around the globe, with an estimated 2.5 million iewing the photographs, and it will be stopping in Shanghai from July 3 to 24 at the Songjiang Art Museum. The show features the winning works of the World Press Photo Contest, showcasing the most interesting, creative images of illustrious photojournalists from the past year. The exhibit, most recently shown in Moscow, The Netherlands, Chile and New York City, opens Wednesday at 10am. It's a little out of the way, we know, but we think it will be worth the trip.
