"Team Darfur" athlete carries the flag for Team USA
The flag bearer for USA in tonight's Olympic opening ceremony will be 1,500-meter runner Lopez Lomong, part of the organization Team Darfur, an organization which has been voicing strong opposition of Chinese involvement in this area. Lomong himself is originally from Sudan, has been living in America for the last seven years but has only been an American for 13 months. This choice of flag bearer does not seem to be entirely in line with the IOC's vision of an Olympics free of political manifestations.
