The self-proclaimed "special one", Chelsea Manager Jose Mourinho (or Jose Moaninho as he's known to British football fans) was not feeling quite so special last night as Barcelona over-powered his dull Chelsea side in every department. Despite running away with the Premier League this year and last year, Chelsea have faultered in the Champions League, even with the benefit of not-so-squeeky-clean Russian Billionaire Roman Abramovich pouring money into the team (440 million pounds -- $765.3 million -- in total since he bought the club in 2003, half of that going to buy new players).

Chinese international captain Du Wei is to return to his old club Shanghai Shenhua shorty, after failing to win a long term deal at Glasgow Celtic.

Shenhua FC brought the curtain down on their 2005 season at Hong Kou Stadium with a 1-1 draw against Wuhan Huanghelou to clinch the runners-up spot in the China Super League (CSL), Shanghaiist observed Saturday afternoon.

Inter Shanghai took the honours in the final Shanghai derby of the China Super League season yesterday, whooping Pudong-based Shanghai Zobon 3-0.

Du Wei, the former Shanghai Shenhua footballer, could be about to make his first-team debut for his new club, Scotland's Celtic FC, which he joined at the beginning of September. One of China's brightest young soccer stars may be headed to one of the sport's most storied franchises. Shanghai Shenhua defender Du Wei began a weeklong trial with Scotland's Celtic FC on Monday. Du, 6-foot-3 and 23 years old, reportedly comes with an £800,000-£1 million price tag. He would be the second major Asian acquisition for the Glasgow-based Hoops this summer. Last week, Celtic purchased Japanese midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura for £3 million. Du's departure would leave a gaping hole at backfield for Shenhua, currently in third place in the China Super League, 10 points behind league-leader Dalian Shide, with three months left in the season.

Asian Football Confederation president Peter Velappan warned that corruption could "kill" soccer in China, according to an AFP story. "The government must investigate the allegations of corruption and eliminate the scourge in Chinese soccer," Velappan said. "[T]hey have to be very serious to fight corruption. When some Southeast Asian countries had this problem, we advised them to get the help of the police. This is what we have advised China to do."
