If, like us, you're stuck in Shanghai over the National Day holiday (hey, somebody's gotta give everyone else stuck in town something to read and entertain themselves with, right?), we suggest you stay right at home. Because if you haven't been around during any Golden Week, you won't know what a nightmare it is going to be out there.

The Shanghai Daily and local media report that a historic slaughterhouse located at 10 Shajing Rd in Shanghai's Hongkou district is set to open in July as a luxury shopping shopping center featuring "house jewelry and car shops". The old slaughterhouse, built in 1933, is famed for being one of three in the world with a unique octagonal architecture, and whose twisting passages, balconies and bridges have been a prized target for wily photographers who could talk their way into the off-limits building used as a factory and warehouse since the 1950s; this "reporter" couldn't get in, but others have. The Metro Express article-cum-press-release linked to above likens the project to Xintiandi and certain areas of the Bund, and reports that architects are referencing old photographs of the building during the restoration process.

Line 7, a north-south line stretching from the outer Putuo District down to the World Expo site in Pudong, will cross the Suzhou Creek southbound through through a tunnel and northbound over a bridge. This is an unprecedented arrangement for the Shanghai metro system. On its journey, Line 7 will also intersect with Line 2 at Jing'an Temple and with Line 1 at Changshu Rd.
• Rumors say Line 4 to be delayed to 2008Rumors say that the structural engineering of ring line 4 will be complete by mid-2007, and that the installation of equipment and testing will take another full year to complete.
