The China Daily translation staff has a case of the sillies! Earlier today it got a little "freaky." Now it's getting handy:

Donations can be in money, goods, blood, organs and bone marrow. But what happens when you mix heartfelt charity with a handful of self-gratification? Sperm donation.

An article entitled College students ready to donate sperm explains, "sperm donation is not just about walking into a place, having a pleasant five minutes with yourself and handing over your happiness in a cup," a sentiment surprisingly similar to the one expressed on this website (second paragraph).

Shanghai Daily had the following headline that caught our eye: "Suicide's wife ordered to compensate landlord." What sort of damage could an event as emotionally traumatic as a suicide cause that would justify any sort of compensation to a third party? Turns out, the kind of damage that most elite in Shanghai fear the most: property devaluation.

We know you're probably tired of hearing about Valentine's Day, but we just discovered on mop.com the existence of a group called the "Go Die Club" (死死团), whose members are on a mission to eradicate love, or at least the mawkish, sugar-coated thing that passes for love and romance in a consumerist society such as today's China. All the information and links are on this main page, including a history of this group. Word has it that the name first came about in Japan in relation to some manga. The name then spread from Japan to Taiwan and Hong Kong and finally to the PRC. However, to the best of our understanding it wasn't always an "anti-Valentine's Day" or love type of group. However, in China, that's what they become. Their motto is "death to couples," but read furtehr before you dismiss this as the gripes of fugly people that never get laid.

On our way to the gym on Sunday, Shanghaiist spotted two men riding what appeared to be Segway Human Transporters in front of the Xintiandi Starbucks. And we thought, Great, Shanghai needs more motorized vehicles on its already cluttered sidewalks. The men were meandering around, attracting stares from curious onlookers. A couple people approached the Segwayers and they handed out business cards. Could China be the next country Segway slowly rolls into (and fails to generate enough sales to survive)? According to Segway's official site, there are no Segway distributors in Mainland China -- Taiwan is the closest.
