In our ongoing Threesday feature, Shanghaiist takes the time to count out three of....well, whatever catches our fancy that week. We did two rounds of lunch deals under 50RMB series but along the way, we also came across some really great sets that were just a little over that budget. These aren't quite as cheap but still very delicious and in our opinion, worth every mao.
Threesday: Great lunch deals for 50 - 80RMB
Threesday: More great lunch deals for under 50RMB
A little while ago, sick of other publications around town attaching the words "lunch deal" to astronomically-priced sets, we highlighted three places where you could dine with your workmates for 50rmb or less. Now we've come across more of these locales!
Threesday: Cheap, but consistently good, hot pot chains
Old Shanghai hands probably know of and have been to all of these places before, but that doesn't mean it's not worth mentioning for the newbies! While there are now more and more fancy hot pot/shabu shabu destinations popping up in Shanghai, these three chains offer great prices (usually around 50~70RMB per person) and good, hearty meals to fight the remnants of the winter blues away.
Threesday: 3 business lunch deals for 50RMB or under
Let's say your coworkers (and maybe a manager) want to go out with you for lunch and talk some combination of office gossip and actual work. You want to choose some place that's got a nice atmosphere and decent food, but the paycheck doesn't come for another week and you want to save as much cash as possible without seeming cheap. Never fear - despite what some would have you think, there are actual cheap-ish deals to be had in Shanghai... and not just at your local la mian shop!
Threesday: Who needs Groupon with these 3 expat-targeted group-buy sites?
In our ongoing Threesday feature, Shanghaiist takes the time to count out three of....well, whatever catches our fancy that week. This week, in the wake of Groupon's blow up, we present other English-language internet coupon deal sites!
Threesday: Handy sites to help you learn Chinese
In our ongoing Threesday feature, Shanghaiist takes the time to count out three of....well, whatever catches our fancy that week. Right now, we're feeling inspired to brush up on our Chinese skills. Yeah, we know we live in China's most "western" city, but that's still no excuse not to try. Whether you're on a quest to master the language or just want to converse with the cabbie, make life easier on yourself and allow these sites to help you out.
Threesday: Three DIY robot costume ideas
There's nothing more fun than dressing up for Halloween but, despite the increasing popularity of Halloween parties around town (yeesh, let's just say the competition's getting harsh!), Shanghai shops have yet to step up. Unfortunately, the places to buy a ready made outfit are basically the same as last year's places. So why not get into the do-it-yourself spirit? Shanghaiist helps you get dressed specifically for our Halloween party: Haibot Apocalypse 2010 with three easy DIY robot-themed costumes.
This Week in Shanghaiist
- A kitten dressed in lambs clothing? Hmm, we’re sure that’s not how the saying goes. Oh well, that’s the least of our worries; latest rumours to reach us are that street vendors are selling “lamb shiskabobs” .without the lamb; opting instead for kitty cat.
- Well that’s the mid-autumn festival over for another year. Unfortunately it isn’t the end of the hectic ‘holiday’ timetabling that we’re sure many of you are suffering. This mid-autumn festival, Google joined in with the ‘festivities’ by ‘pimping’ their homepage for the day. They paid homage to the lady on the moon; a lady soon to be joined by Chinese astronauts! Obviously remembering her by eating mooncake’s is far easier and far more cost efficient. You may just want to disregard any leftover cakes though - no point in expanding China’s waistline anymore.
- We’ve been struck with a dose of i-Fever this week. Not only were we slightly puzzled by the over eagerness of some Macnerds to get their hands on an i-pad, (including one guy who queued for 19 hours .despite already owning one?!) but we also realised that Apple get off on seeing people form ‘en mass’ outside their shops; there second store in Shanghai opened yesterday - the same day as the China iPhone4 launch.
Threesday: Chinese fashion blogs II
In our ongoing Threesday feature, Shanghaiist takes the time to count out three of....well, whatever catches our fancy that week. Today, it's more Chinese fashion blogs. We got some great feedback in our last rundown and it prompted us to dig around a little more for other style stand outs. So with that, here's another serving of Chinese fashion on the web.
Threesday: 3 Dukes of Hazzard-themed costumes we want to see on July 4
Sure, you could always wear a Western shirt and a cowboy hat to be one of the Duke brothers (and really, the only way we'd be able to tell the difference between Bo and Luke is their hair)...and heck knows being Daisy Duke is even easier, but it may take a little more finesse to win our Dukes of Hazzard costume contest at our upcoming Fourth of July party at Boxing Cat Brewery.
Threesday: 3 reasons why this week rocked for Chinese women
If the news this week is anything to go by, it's not too bad a week for women here in China. Sure, a UNDP report calculated that there were 96 million of us missing in East Asia - but we knew that already (and besides, at least in the cities, the gap seems to be narrowing). Anyway, here's three reasons why the last few days have been pretty stellar on the femme front.
Threesday: 3 (more) ways to help Haiti
In our ongoing Threesday feature, Shanghaiist takes the time to count out three of....well, whatever catches our fancy that week. Here we present three different ways to help with the relief efforts in Haiti without having to leave Shanghai.
Threesday: Chocolate bars PART II - foreign finds
We firmly believe that chocolate cannot be confined to one day -- especially with such an overabundance of choices! Therefore, we present Part II of our quest for chocolate (within a 15 minute time frame). This time, we bring you the foreign stuff. Enjoy.
Early Threesday: Chocolate bars PART I - local options
In light of the recent spat of chocolate-related news, perhaps you may be wondering - what is the state of chocolate in China?
Threesday: Three Shanghai-themed Halloween costumes we're hoping to see
In our ongoing Threesday feature, Shanghaiist takes the time to count out three of well... whatever catches their fancy that week. This week: Shanghai-themed costumes we'd be super psyched to see gracing our Halloween party on Saturday.
Threesday: Tips for finding a Halloween costume in Shanghai
There are certain Western traditions that just don't quite translate - customs that the majority of Chinese people don't understand and indeed do not even try to understand because the tradition itself seems preposterous. One such ritual is Halloween. And yet that hasn't stopped the foreign population (and us!) from celebrating it.
Threesday: Arcades and awkward video games
Whether you've convinced yourself that you're an adult or not, somewhere deep inside each one of us is a small child clamoring to be let out. And we find that more often than not, our inner child wants us to take him to the arcade- specifically, the Sega World arcade in the New Century Plaza right off People's Park.
