The sight of a BMW Mini police car parked outside a police station in the city of Tianjin has raised eyebrows among residents there. When a journalist from Southern Metropolitan Daily arrived at Binhai District's Tanggu Road police station where the car was parked, her requests for an interview was rebuffed by the duty officer who said he could not reveal his chief's cell phone number, and that "you can say whatever you like about it on the internet." Well, she went back to her office, put up what he said on the paper's Weibo, and the tweet has since been shared close to 4,000 times. more ›

Swimmers fried after live wire falls into public pool

"A SWIMMING pool in Tianjin Municipality has been closed after a live electric wire snapped and fell into the pool, killing three people and injuring several others. Bohai Swimming Pool executives are being investigated by police after the fatal accident on July 14. Authorities said an electric wire, which was connected to a sunshade above the pool, ruptured and fell into the water due to strong wind. Some witnesses said at least six people, including a 67-year-old swimming instructor, were injured and hospitalized. Authorities declined to reveal details before they completed their investigation." The second bombing of its kind in as many weeks, a man surnamed Liu has been arrested for bombing a government building in Tianjin yesterday. The explosion occurred around 10am and injured two people. The man has allegedly claimed the attack was a "revenge against society." It's not clear at this time what his specific grievances were, and the search results for "Tianjing bombings" (天津爆炸案) have already been censored from Sina Weibo. more ›

EU Trade Commissioner UK Business Secretary Peter Mandelson drinks Chinese milk, then gets diagnosed with kidney stone 9 days later

On Sept 26, in Tianjin at the World Economic Forum, EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson drank a glass of milk (click to see video) in front of the media to show his support for the Chinese dairy industry and said:

The Europeans will continue to expect the highest standards, just as Chinese consumers are demanding the same…. But in the meantime I shall continue drinking my own favorite, er, milk, er, product, er, er, which I enjoy and which does not make me nervous.
His action, it was reported in the China Daily, touched Premier Wen Jiabao:
Wen said he was very moved when he saw in television European Union Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson drinking a cup of Chinese milk on Friday to show his trust in China-made products. “It's because he not only sees the present, but the future as well,” Wen said.
Just nine days later, Peter Mandelson, who now has a new job as Business Secretary back in the UK, has been diagnosed with a kidney stone:
"Over the past few days, Peter Mandelson has been experiencing some kidney pain," a spokesman said. more ›

In February we marveled when doctors in Urumqi removed a parasitic twin from the belly of this baby girl. The rare abnormality has occurred again, this time with an infant in Henan province. The fetus in fetu was discovered after the boy was born with an extra penis on his back, which was removed in a three-hour procedure on June 6. While the case was the first of its type at the Tianjin Childrens’ Hospital, doctors say that are not more than 100 cases of parasitic twins in the world, with ten of them in China.
